Biodiversity Program

Biodiversity designates the variety and variability of living organisms that inhabit the biosphere. Launched in October 2004, the mission of the Biodiversity Program is to help protect and enhance biological diversity in Lebanon.

Its objectives include the following:
  • Document the current biodiversity in Lebanon
  • Understand the relationships between species and their habitats
  • Identify and document new and extinct species
  • Design conservation strategies that protect important areas of biodiversity
  • Devise means to reintroduce "locally" extinct species and protect them
  • Create and disseminate knowledge concerning renewable resources
  • Train the next generation of conservation scientists
  • Build the scientific and conservation skills of scientists and local people
  • Help meet national and regional needs for expertise in biodiversity by preparing scientists, managers and policy-makers to work in interdisciplinary teams
  • Become a reference center for environmental legislation for biodiversity
The over-arching objective of the Program is to develop a culture of deep respect to biodiversity and the environment at the University of Balamand, and, from the University, to the rest of the Lebanese society.
The Biodiversity Program launched and is conducting several activities to increase local and national awareness on the topic of biological diversity in Lebanon - including organizing and presenting lectures on biological diversity and organizing field trips to nature reserves in Lebanon. Furthermore, a research proposal was submitted to produce innovative ideas to help youth in rural communities increase their income. In addition, program personnel have participated in several environmental conferences.
