Installation of an Air Quality Monitoring Station at UOB – PM-02

In line with the Draft Law for the Protection of Air Quality (currently under discussion in the Parliamentary Committee for the Environment), the Ministry of Environment (MOE) has initiated continuous air quality monitoring as part of a longer term plan to improve air quality management in the country. Following the development of an air quality monitoring program (based on a scientific air dispersion modeling exercise at national scale), 18 Air Quality Monitoring Stations (AQMS) have been installed at national level (Fig. 1) of which three have been mounted in the Qaza of Koura (Fiih; Kfar-Hazir; and the University of Balamand-UOB; Fig. 2). This initiative is implemented by the MOE with the support of the Greek Government/UNDP and the EU/StREG program.

Within this context, the Institute of the Environment (IOE) at UOB has been liaising with the MOE for the University to become an active and supporting member of the existing National Air Quality Monitoring Network in the country. These efforts resulted in the signature of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the MOE and UOB where Station PM-02 was installed on the roof of Zakhem Building - UOB Main Campus on Friday February 19, 2017 (Fig. 3 and 4). This station monitors particulate matter (PM10, PM2.5, and PM1) and data is expected to be made available starting April 2017. As per the MOU, the IOE is currently acting as the focal point for PM-02 and can be contacted for any further information on
