The Faculty of Health Sciences offers a Master of Science (M.S.) degree in Clinical Laboratory Sciences. The Program provides an advanced level of education and training for candidates with a background in medical laboratory sciences as well as basic science or biomedical sciences.

Major emphasis is placed on developing an understanding of the mechanisms of human diseases and providing broad-based training in laboratory medicine through practical training and research. Students are expected to develop enhanced problem-solving abilities and capacities to function more actively in clinical and biomedical settings.

Two areas of specialization are currently offered: Clinical Microbiology and Diagnostic Molecular Biology.

The M.S. degree requirements include successful completion of 30 credits, consisting of 24 credits of course-work and a six-credit master thesis based on original research. Ideally, students would identify a thesis-director in their first semester and would submit a research proposal to be evaluated by a scientific committee. Upon completion of their research, students are expected to defend their work in front of a jury.

Graduates are well prepared to pursue doctoral studies in a related discipline, or career opportunities as senior technologists in hospitals or private clinical laboratories, pharmaceuticals, industries, or research.

The deadline for submitting applications is August 1, 2016. Click here for early admissions.

For further information, interested candidates are invited to contact the Faculty of Health Sciences.

The following are the Objectives and Learning Outcomes of the MS-CLS:

Objectives

  1. Equip students with skills in applied molecular biology and clinical microbiology using classical techniques and modern technology.
  2. Provide theoretical and practical expertise in the field of clinical lab sciences.
  3. Provide a supportive learning environment by participating and engaging in classroom discussions.
  4. Develop students’ skills for in-depth learning and gathering information by searching the literature and making accurate conclusions.
  5. Formulate and implement a research scheme designed to test an original hypothesis related to an important issue in the CLS field.
  6. Analyze and interpret research data, present and debate relevance of findings to the general field of interest, both orally and in standard written format.
  7. Equip students with necessary skills for a successful career in hospitals, pharmaceutical industries, and academia.

Learning Outcomes

CLS graduates will be able to:
  1. Perform accurate laboratory testing and experiments in clinical microbiology or molecular biology.
  2. Write a research proposal and apply for funding.
  3. Formulate and test hypotheses using appropriate experimental design and statistical analysis of data.
  4. Launch a research project that addresses an identified gap in the literature in the area of CLS.
  5. Analyze experimental results using appropriate controls and determine their strength and validity.
  6. Communicate clearly and effectively in their area of expertise.
  7. Serve as a successful senior technologist in clinical Laboratories.
  8. Be a competitive candidate for a job in the pharmaceutical industry, or for doctoral studies.
