1-Projects

a- Elderly project:

June 2013: As part of the course requirements, NURS245-Nursing Care of the Elderly, the nursing students (English and French sections) organized a social / cultural event for the elderly residents at Foyer Saint Georges Achrafieh. The program entailed social and handcraft activities animated by live music that made the event cheerful and agreeable to all.


b- Community Project:

- December 2012: As part of the course requirement, NURS249-Nursing in the Community, the students organized several activities assisted by their tutors such as:

  • Trip to the National museum of Beirut and Wax museum at Jbeil for the elderly women’s group at Howard Karagheusian Commemorative Corporation (HKCC).
  • Developing a Health Record and performing a complete physical assessment for the 50 children at the “Home of Hope”. In addition, the students organized a health fair that included health promotion, educational games, and health screening activities.

- December 2011: As part of the course requirement, NURS249-Nursing in the Community, the students organized several activities such as:

  • A workshop on “Infection Control in Primary Health Care Centers” that took place at the Howard Karagheusian Center
  • A health fair on “Hygiene and Home Accidents” that took place at the Orthodox Center for Primary Health Care
  • A three days retreat at Ain-Aar entitled “Healthy Lifestyle” targeting Teenagers at risk attending Howard Karagheusian Center. Teenagers learned how to make healthy food choices and first aid


2- Workshops & Seminars

Within the context of Continuing Education, the Nursing Program organized the following activities:

Main Campus

    • June 2013: The first Nursing Preceptorship workshop was held for potential preceptors in the North. A total of 14 staff nurses and 8 nursing directors and Continuing education officers from 7 hospitals in North attended the workshop. It was coordinated by U. Rizk and Dr. M-T Sabbagh, with the interventions of M. Azar, S. Sailian, H. Chakhtoura, and V. Gebran.
    • November 8 and 9, 2012: A workshop on “Community Nursing” was held targeting 31 participants from North Health Centers affiliated with the Ministry of Social Affairs (MOSA), Ministry of Public Health (MOPH), and private NGOs from Akkar, Dennieh, Zgharta, Tripoli, and Kurah. It was coordinated by U. Rizk and Dr. M-T. Sabbagh, with the interventions of H. Chakhtoura, V. Gebran and G. Keserwani.
    • February 6, 7 and 8, 2012: A workshop on “Oncology Nursing” was held targeting 24 nurses from 11 hospitals in North Lebanon and Jbeil. This Workshop was organized in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO). It was coordinated by Dr. M-T. Sabbagh, with the interventions of S. Sailian and V. Gebran .
    • June 2011: A “School Health Workshop was held for the nurses and health workers in private schools in the North and Jbeil. It was coordinated by U. Rizk and Dr. M-T Sabbagh, with the interventions of U. Rizk, B. Abdallah, M. Azar, V. Gebran, Dr. M-T. Sabbagh, and H. Aoun.
    • February 2011: A workshop on “Physical Assessment was held at the UOB-FHS Kurah Main Campus. Nurses from 10 hospitals attended the workshop. It was coordinated by B. Abdallah and V. Gebran. The speakers were B. Abdallah, V. Gebran,  Dr. F. Sahyoun, and Mr. A. Chamoun.

Achrafieh Campus

    • July 2011 and on a yearly basis : Teaching Nursing Skills Module for medical students (Med 1) – Faculty of Medicine - UOB – conducted by nursing faculty: B. Abdallah, S. Sailian, and V. Gebran . The course consists of two lectures followed by the clinical laboratory skills practice in the Nursing Laboratory.
    • June / July (11 & 12) 2013: Two Nursing Preceptorship workshops were held in collaboration with St. George Hospital University Medical Center (SGHUMC) targeting 55 potential preceptors of SGHUMC nurses. This was coordinated by M. Azar in collaboration with W. Maalouf (Nursing Director - SGHUMC). The speakers were all faculty members of the Nursing program, in addition to W. Maalouf and L. Daher from SGHUMC, and guest speaker Z. Maalouf (Social counselor).
    • May 2013: The study “Nursing Faculty teaching Nursing skills to medical students: a Lebanese experience” was presented at the MEMA symposium in AUB, by B. Abdallah and S. Sailian.
    • March / April 2013: A workshop on “Newborn and Pediatric Physical assessment” was held targeting pediatric staff nurses at SGHUMC coordinated by B. Abdallah. A total of 54 staff nurses and midwives from delivery suite, ER pediatric, pediatric intensive care, and neonatal intensive care units attended the workshop that was followed by hands on application at SGHUMC, guided by Drs. Kamel, Mansour, and Mouawad. Several speakers contributed to the 2 day workshop from the FHS-UOB Nursing Program and SGHUMC as follows: B. Abdallah, M. Azar, Dr. L. Kurdahi, Dr. H. Mansour, R. Attieh, J. Barbour, L. Ballan, M. Kassis, and C. Zanazanian.
    • From March 2012 until June 2012: A workshop on “Physical Assessment” was held targeting 6 groups of twelve registered nurses from medical, surgical, or general services at SGHUMC . This workshop was coordinated by the Academic Service Committee with the interventions of Dr. M-T Sabbagh , B. Abdallah, and V. Gebran . The workshop was followed by hands on application at SGHUMC.
    • From March 2012 until June 2012 : Two Training Modules entitled “Essential Nursing in Primary Health Care” were conducted by faculty members of the Nursing Program to UNRWA nurses, as a response to the “Terms of Reference for a training program to improve knowledge and skills of nurses within UNRWA in the field of Primary Health Care”, dated November 2011. The training aimed at addressing gaps and other felt needs in order to facilitate the smooth upgrade of about 60 practical and senior practical nurses.
    • July 2010 / July 2011 / September 2012: A workshop on “Oncology Nursing” targeting nurses at SGHUMC was organized by the Continuing Education Committee of SGHUMC, in collaboration with the Nursing Program, and with the interventions of S. Sailian and V. Gebran.
    • April 2012 : U. Rizk, presented a commentary on the presentation by Dr. Joyce Fitzpatrick “Spirituality in Health Care”, within the First Annual Symposium on “Crucial Conversations in Nursing”, at the Lebanese American University (LAU).
    • March - April 2011:B. Abdallah presented a lecture on “Identification of a Baby in Distress” in the Regional Bi-annual Meeting of the National Collaborative Perinatal Neonatal Network (NCPNN), held at Le Bristol Hotel, Beirut- Lebanon.
