Did you know that the United Nations has declared 2013 as the International Year of Quinoa?!

Quinoa is a grain that has been grown for thousands of years by the Andean people in Latin America, using environmentally friendly techniques. Current production all over the world is in the hands of small scale farmers.

Quinoa has superior nutritional characteristics, high protein value, and is gluten free. A quinoa grain contains minerals at a higher level than cereals; its iron content is twice that of wheat, three times that of rice and almost that of bean, AND, it has 1.5 times more calcium than wheat.

No wonder that in today’s world, quinoa offers an alternative for those countries suffering from food insecurity, malnutrition and poverty.
