Dear Dr. Nasr:

It is a distinct pleasure for me to announce the 7th annual Global Business Challenge (GBC), an undergraduate international case competition hosted by the University of Washington Business School.  This event will take place the week of April 4 - 10, 2005 , with the competition itself scheduled for Saturday, April 9th.  I am also pleased to extend my personal invitation to the University of Balamand to participate in this experience by selecting and sending a four-person student team and faculty advisor.

The GBC brings together students from 16 of the world’s finest undergraduate business schools. Each year the teams represent every major region of the globe.  Please see the enclosed list of former GBC participants.

Each 4-person student team analyzes a multi-disciplinary, globally focused business case and presents its recommendations to a panel of judges from the business community.  The goal of this event is to provide students a truly extraordinary opportunity for learning outside the classroom.  This experience will enhance their global business literacy, sensitize them to the international character of the world they are entering, and assist in the development and refinement of the skills necessary to be successful as future business leaders.  It also provides an international benchmarking opportunity for participating universities.

The UW Business School is pleased to cover the costs of the student hotel accommodations, all meals for the student teams (except for arrival and departure days), local travel and telephone, a corporate tour, a lake cruise, a faculty advisor luncheon, and the awards banquet.  Participating universities can expect the following expenses:

  • Team Registration fee:                                                               $500/team
  • Faculty advisor’s Hotel costs:                                                     $120-$140/night plus tax
  • Some faculty advisor meals:                                                       variable
  • Faculty advisor and student long distance telephone charges:      variable
  • Airfare for faculty advisor:                                                         variable
  • Airfare for student participants:                                                  variable
  • Other incidental/personal costs:                                                  variable

In the past, some schools have found corporate sponsor(s) to defray air travel and other costs associated with student team participation. In past years, for example, EVA Air, Lancome and Vladivostok Air each sponsored teams.   Sponsorship is not required, however, to participate To assist with securing sponsorships, we are able to send you GBC promotional material, samples of previous cases, and funding proposals. Please contact us if you would like this information.

There are two categories of student team sponsorship:

  • Team Air Travel Sponsorship: Sponsorship that covers the cost of team air travel will be recognized in all GBC publications.
  • Team Competition Sponsorship:  Sponsorship of local competition expenses for a team (lodging, food, and local transportation for one week) at a cost of $5000 (U.S. Dollars) will be recognized in all GBC publications. The Sponsor(s) will also be invited to send one representative to judge the competition.

We do not intend for financial considerations to restrict school participation. Financial support may be available to schools that can demonstrate need, as well as a good faith effort to secure sponsorship. Please contact us if your school falls into this category.

To secure your school’s participation, please send an email/fax to Deanna Fryhle fax: (206) 543-5985 indicating your interest and availability prior to November 10th.  Participating teams will be confirmed on a first-come, first-served basis with broad global representation a key consideration.  Confirmed teams will be sent registration materials with instructions for payment of the team registration fee.
