Semaan Tool for Assessing & Rating Sustainability

​The purpose of this project is to develop a new building sustainable assessment and rating tool, done at the University Of
​Balamand (UOB), entitled “SEMAAN TOOL FOR ASSESSING AND RATING SUSTAINABILITY”, or simply STARS.

STARS is specifically designed for Lebanese buildings, considering natural environment, social and economic criteria.

A Green Building (GB) is a building that considers resource reduction and waste reduction for the period of its whole service life. Green Building design consists of incorporating the standards of a manageable site, optimizing water productivity, preserving energy, using resource-efficient materials, minimization of waste, optimize ventilation, minimizing ecological effects, maximizing living standards, and optimizing asset utilization.

LEEDS and BREAM, two worldwide green building rating methods are not applicable to Lebanese buildings.

ARZ, a local Lebanese rating tool is fuzzy, very subjective and expensive to use.

STARS considers the following criteria illustrated in the following figure:
 
 
 

STARS Evaluation steps:
  1. Use the STARS Criteria checklist
  2. Criteria relative importance Weights are pre-evaluated using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) mathematical decision tool.
  3. Evaluate Criterion Utility for each one.
  4. STARS uses the Multi-Attribute Utility Theory (MAUT), a mathematical multi-criteria decision analysis tool, in order to evaluate a criterion score, and the total STARS Score.
