Mechanical Engineering Laboratory

The Department of Mechanical Engineering has the following laboratories for research and applied work:

WORKSHOP TECHNOLOGY LABORATORY
This laboratory covers applications on:

  • Drilling;
  • Milling;
  • Grinding;
  • Lath work;
  • Welding;
  • Molding;
  • Heat treatments;
  • Forging;
  • Electric workshop technologies.

 

STRUCTURES LABORATORY
This laboratory covers applications on:

  • Analysis of statically determinate structures: beams, trusses and arches;
  • Elastic deformations;
  • Deflection of beams;
  • Moment distribution in indeterminate structures;
  • Response analysis of structures subjected to different types of excitations.

 

MACHINE LABORATORY
This laboratory covers applications on:

  • Magnetic circuits and transformers;
  • Electromechanical conversion processes;
  • DC/AC machines;
  • Induction motors;
  • Fractional horsepower motors.

 

DYNAMIC and CONTROL LABORATORY
This laboratory covers applications on:

  • Multi-degree of freedom systems;
  • Vibration in structure with sound field;
  • Vibration control in machinery;
  • Design of pneumatic overall systems;
  • Manipulator kinetics, and inverse kinematics;
  • Trajectory generation, position, velocity & force control;
  • Robot languages and systems.


ENGINE LABORATORY
This laboratory covers applications on:

  • Combustion cycles;
  • Fuel systems;
  • Turbo energy and power;
  • Various engine designs, cycles, compression, combustion chamber, turbine, nozzles and various propulsion efficiencies.

 

HEAT & REFRIGERATION LABORATORY
This laboratory covers applications on:

  • Application of thermodynamics;
  • Heating and cooling loads;
  • Psychometric processes;
  • Design of piping and duct systems;
  • Hot and cold water systems;
  • Heat transfer and the design of HVAC equipment.

 

AERODYNAMIC LABORATORY
This laboratory covers applications on:

  • Aerodynamic Characteristics of Aircraft Components;
  • Thermal stresses and plasticity: applications in plane stress systems;
  • Complex frameworks;
  • Structural airworthiness;
  • Thin walled tube with all loading conditions;
  • Axial flow turbines;
  • Radial variation in compressors and turbines;
  • Centrifugal compressors;
  • Airframe and wing designs high lift device selection;
  • Flight control surface design;
  • Undercarriage layout and design;
  • Performance weight and balance estimations;
  • Aerodynamics Systems design.

 

COMPUTATIONAL FLUID DYNAMIC LAB
This laboratory covers the following applications:

  • Fluid properties;
  • Conservation principles (continuity, energy and momentum);
  • Similitude and hydraulic models;
  • Incompressible flow in pipes;
  • Viscous effects fluid dynamic resistance;
  • Laminar and turbulent flow;
  • Basic theory of CFD;
  • Flow modeling;
  • CFD computer packages.


AIRCRAFT TRAINING WORKSHOP
This laboratory covers the following applications:

  • Aircraft maintenance technology;
  • Approved aircraft maintenance procedures;
  • Aircraft systems inspection and repair
