Department of Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics offers a program leading to a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. The program aims at:

  1. Providing students with a robust and extensive background in mathematics
  2. Preparing students for graduate and further higher level studies
  3. Preparing students to pursue a profession in Mathematics or Mathematics education or careers in various industries where there is a demand for a rigorous understanding of mathematics or statistics
  4. Developing the student’s ability to pursue knowledge independently by acquiring skills in problem solving, critical thinking, and logical analysis
  5. Enabling students to understand the power of mathematics and its role in human culture
  6. Emphasizing the close association of mathematics with the real world and its role in the fields of social sciences, physical and life sciences, engineering, and business.
The program of study leads to a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics with the following tracks:
  1. General Mathematics
  2. Applied Mathematics
  3. Actuarial Science
  4. tatistics
Students in each of these tracks may obtain teacher certification by including in their programs the teaching diploma requirements -- see Department of Education.
To qualify for a BS degree in Mathematics the student must complete a minimum of 90 credits. These include:
  1. 30 credits in general University requirements
  2. 21 credits in mandatory mathematics courses
  3. 39 credits in major courses from the department depending on the chosen track.

Graduate  Program in Mathematics

A Master’s degree in Computational Mathematics does not only go hand in hand with the university mission to offer a graduate programs in all fields, but it opens new  opportunities for students to have a degree that is unique and fills a need that has not been properly addressed by local and, to a large extent, regional universities. In addition, Computational Mathematics is now among the hottest areas of research at both industry and academic levels.

By design, the program has a multi-disciplinary aspect not only in the Faculty of Sciences (Computer Science and Mathematics), but also with the Faculty of Engineering. This is evident in the heavy emphasis on computational methods and numerical simulation as well as in the fact that some of the courses offered in the program are already taught at the graduate level in the Faculty of Engineering.
