Cell Biology Exhibition

Date: Tuesday, January 13, 2015

I always had a passion for teaching and interacting with students but lately I felt that students wanted something “more interactive”… Ever since I was a graduate student, I focused mainly on sorting mechanisms used by the cell to deposit material into the extracellular matrix or the plant cell wall and form networks there. I try to convey my enthusiasm about cellular mechanisms within this course.  I always ask my students to prepare a presentation, poster, or video related to the topics within the scope of the course.

Since Spring Semester 2013, I decided to introduce a project where students had to make a cell or cell part focusing on a chapter within the course. Project meetings were done outside class time.  This directly had a great effect: students worked harder, researched their topics for most of the semester, prepared their posters and models and worked as teams. This gave me a lot of satisfaction because I could see that all our students were learning their material and going beyond the scope of the course. It created a time for students to meet in the library or cafeteria to work on or discuss science and their project…. The projects are becoming more and more sophisticated with each semester; Biology students are seeking the help of students from different majors to enrich their projects.

The day of the exhibition was also very rewarding for us all since it was a mixture of science and fun! Professors, staff, and students all gave a positive feedback!
Thank you Cell students for your enthusiasm! I hope that future students will be as creative as Fall 2014 students were.
Good Luck!
