Elements of Acoustic Waves in Porous Media

ABSTRACT: Characterization of porous media using non destructive methods is considered a very important field due to its application in many interesting areas such as oil exploration and tissue characterization, to name a few. One of these non destructive, non invasive methods is based on acoustic wave propagation. An introduction to the elements of acoustic wave propagation will be presented showing the characteristics of a porous medium and explaining how to pass from the Lagrange theory to Biot theory in order to find the evolution of the velocity and coefficient of attenuation for the transversal wave and the two slow and rapid longitudinal waves.
