ABSTRACT: Interactive whiteboards (IWBs) are appearing in many classrooms around the world. In fact, one is being trialed in UOB in the fall semester 2007. The use of cutting edge technology is said to help students develop the digital literacy necessary for the 21st century. There is also much discussion in the relevant literature of how the IWB allows for a new pedagogy which exploits the interactiveness of the technology and improves learning. While there is no doubt that the technology is spreading rapidly around the world, there is less evidence to support the claims that a new pedagogy is emerging in tandem.

This presentation will:
  • Review the arguments in favor of the use of IWBs;
  • Show a short film of a primary school teacher working with an IWB;
  • Report on research into how students of English as a foreign language perceive the use of the IWB in their classes.
  • Present recommendations for using IWBs in language classes.
