Civil Engineering students win first and second prizes in ACI- ACTS competition

The University of Balamand Civil Engineering department claimed first and second prizes in the ACI (American Concrete Institute) Fiber-Reinforced Concrete Bowling Ball Competition, where twenty seven groups from ten universities competed.

The University was represented by three teams, with each team comprising two members. The teams were formed by Line Horkos and Yara Daoud, Antoine Hilal and Dola Nehmeh, Elie Nasr and Ramez Bou Rizk. The three teams were supervised by Dr. Najib Gerges, Dr. Hikmat Zerbe, Ms. Nina Hilal and Engineer Philippe Hawi, and the lab work was supervised by Mr. Richard Khoury.

The aim of the competition was to demonstrate the effect of fibers in reinforced concrete, to gain experience in forming and fabricating a fiber-reinforced concrete element, and to encourage creativity in engineering analysis and design. The competition required the students to construct concrete bowling balls with specified diameter and weight, in addition to demonstrating a high strength of the concrete, and the capability of the balls in hitting as many bowling pins as possible.

Results were announced during the annual ACTS Future Concrete Conference, held on August 25th, 2016, at the Hilton-Habtoor hotel. The first prize was awarded to Elie Nasr and Ramez Bou Rizk, while the second prize was awarded to Antoine Hilal and Dola Nehmeh. First prize winners were granted a trip to attend the ACI Concrete Convention and Exposition Fall 2016 in Philadelphia PA, USA. Click here, for more details.
Congratulations to them and to the Civil Engineering Department!
