Balamand ACI Student Chapter

The Department of Civil Engineering, in a celebration on the 7th of March 2017, has officially launched the University of Balamand American Concrete Institute (ACI) Student Chapter. The celebration was attended by Ms. Gina Korek, a representative from the (ACI) Lebanon Chapter, the Senior Marketing Coordinator at Advanced Construction Technology Services (ACTS) and the Student Chapter Coordinator of ACI Lebanon Student Chapter, Dr. Najib Gerges, the Chairman of the Civil & Environmental Engineering Department, Dr. Nariman Khalil, the Balamand Student Chapter Advisor, Dr. Hikmat Zerbe the Balamand Student Chapter Contact Person, and department faculty members, staff, and students.

The Department is really privileged to be the first in Lebanon and surrounding countries to obtain this Chapter, Dr. Gerges stated. The University of Balamand was selected to initiate the first Student Chapter in Lebanon based on the continuous interest in concrete that the Department has demonstrated during the past few years. Winning first prize in ACI student competitions three times in the last four years certainly showed how much the university is continuously trying to build-up team spirit and how dedicated the students, advisors, and Department are, he continued.

The ACI Student Chapter was awarded to the Civil Engineering Department at the University of Balamand on the 20th of October 2016 through the ACI Lebanon Chapter, Dr. Khalil stated. The American Concrete Institute (ACI) founded in 1904 and headquartered in Farmington Hills, Michigan, USA, is a leading authority and resource worldwide for the development and distribution of consensus-based standards, technical resources, educational programs, and proven expertise for individuals and organizations involved in concrete design, construction, and materials, who share a commitment to pursuing the best use of concrete. ACI has over 95 chapters, 110 student chapters, and nearly 20,000 members spanning over 120 countries. The purpose of the Student Chapter is to encourage student interest in the study of concrete and to develop an awareness of ACI, ACI chapters, and consensus procedures by which ACI operates, Dr. Khalil concluded.

At the end, Dr. Zerbe presented a flashback of the ACI Student Competition Projects, stressing on the hard work and commitment of the participating students and advisors.

The event ended with a welcoming reception to all attendees.
