Balamand’s Adventure Club in support of
Oum El-Nour

Last year, the University of Balamand launched an awareness campaign entitled "Drugs cost you more than money", to inform students about the adverse effects of drugs. The Adventure Club took part in this campaign by interacting with school students through hiking trips to raise awareness under the theme "Sports is a free therapy".

This year, as a continuation of the project, the Adventure Club members (Youssif Khalifeh, Maria Kiwan, Michel Hakim, Hasan Khalifeh, Romario Makhlouf, and Wafaa Al-Hassan) raised funds for the Oum El-Nour Rehabilitation Center by participating in a cycling trip in Europe from June 11 till June 19, 2015, covering a distance of 620 km in 7 days (France to Switzerland). They were escorted by the Dean of Student Affairs Dr Tony Gergess and coach Nabil Nasr. This event was sponsored by AZM, Social Way, Hallab, Grand Cinemas, Oakley, STC, Soprel, IBL Bank and Cimenterie National.

The Club has raised $11,000 to be used in restoring the athletics center of Oum El-Nour in Sehayli, where a check was presented to the Vice-President of the organization, Mr Gabriel Debbani, in the presence of members of the administration and Dr Gergess, Mrs Joanne Harb, Miss Judy Mitri and coach Nasr.

The visit to the Rehabilitation Center began with a tour of the premises, mainly the athletics center that is to be restored, followed by a touching meeting with two drug addicts currently receiving treatment. This gave the visitors the incentive to organize more events designed to help the spread of awareness about drugs, hoping that what the Adventure Club was doing would motivate other clubs and institutions to act similarly.
