New BA Program in Mass Communication

Starting in the Fall of 2014, students majoring in Mass Communication will be able to choose from three different tracks:
  • Radio/TV Performance and Production
  • Journalism and News Management
  • Marketing Communication
The new program is structured so that all MCOM students will register in seven common core courses, and seven courses in their chosen track. All students will also have to intern at a media institution, or program, under professional supervision.

The total number of credit hours for the program remains at 90. However, students will have to attend at least two out-of-class-hours workshops.

The change in the program was prompted by a number of reasons, says the chair of the Mass Communication Department, Dr. Ramez Maluf. “First, the new program will allow students to focus on their own interests, and will provide them with a stronger competitive edge in the market.” Disciplines in Mass Communication, says Dr. Maluf, are very divergent, a fact that the current program does not address adequately.

“For example, there is a lot of distance between courses that lead to a career in TV production, and those that lead to a career in print journalism, or in advertising,” says Dr. Maluf.

Moreover, adds Assistant Professor Sleiman Bssawmai, the new program takes into consideration recent developments in the field. "The new program is tailored to meet the needs of a growing regional media industry,” says Dr. Bssawmai.

The seven core courses of the program are:
  • Mass Communication and Audiovisual Electronic Techniques
  • Journalistic Forms
  • International and Arab Communication
  • Ethics and Law in Mass Communication
  • Public Opinion
  • Current Issues in the Media
  • Internship
The courses in the Journalism and News Management track are:
  • News Writing
  • Feature Writing
  • Newsroom Management
  • TV Reporting
  • Journalism Workshop
  • Documentary
  • Topics
The courses in the Radio/TV Performance and Production track are:
  • Radio Program
  • TV Program
  • Audiovisual Performances
  • Sound, Light, Stagecraft and Technical production
  • Directing and Editing Techniques for Film and TV
  • Script Writing
  • Documentary Film-making
The courses in the Marketing Communication track are:
  • Introduction to Marketing
  • Principles of Advertising
  • Public Relations
  • Media Planning and Advertising Campaigns
  • Computer Graphics and Video Animation
  • Integrated Marketing Communications
  • Event Management
The MCOM faculty will be working with each student currently enrolled in the program to ensure a smooth transition into the new program. Students approaching graduation on the current program will be able to continue their studies in line with the standing program. ​
