Civil Engineering Students Win First Prize in ACI - ACTS Competition

University of Balamand civil engineering students won the first prize in the ACI (American Concrete Institute) Egg Protection Device Competition, in addition to claiming the third and fourth places.

The competition focused on designing and building the highest-impact-load resistant plain or reinforced concrete Egg Protection Device (EPD) where twenty eight different groups from seven universities (UOB, AUB, LAU, BAU, LU, NDU and RHU) participated in the competition.

The university competed with three teams, who worked under the supervision of  Dr. Nagib Gerges, Dr. Hikmat Zerbe, Dr. Tamara Bittar, and Ms. Nina Hilal. The Balamand teams won the first (Marianne Abi-Fadel and Celine Habib), third (Rached Rached), and fourth (Alda Abi-Younes and Lara Zerbe) places.

On June 19, the results were announced, at the Le Royal Hotel in Dbayyeh , where the first prize was awarded to Celine Habib and Marianne Abi Fadel, both of whom  were granted a trip to attend the ACI 2014 fall convention in Washington, DC.

The aim of the ACI competition is to learn and report on concrete's impact resistance and other real-life aspects which an EPD simulates.

Students in the competition designed a reinforced concrete frame restricted to specific dimensions and weight and limited steel reinforcement.  The designed EPD was subjected to an impact load of 8 kg falling, one time, from each of the following increasing heights of  0.5 m, 1.0 m, 1.5 m, 2.0 m, 2.5 m, and up to five times from the maximum height of 3.0 m.

The winning EPD was determined based on the maximum energy (load x height) prior to failure and larger number of impact repetitions at 3.0 m height (for EPDs reaching this load stage) and based on a minimum mass that should not exceed 3000 grams.

Balamand civil engineering teams were able to meet all the requirements of the testing procedures and were thus awarded first, third, and fourth prizes.

Our congratulations to them!
