High School Students Enjoy Computer Science Day

On April 25, the Department of Computer Science organized a “Computer Science Day,” a one-day gathering for high school students interested in computing. The main goal behind the event was to introduce students to the relation between the computer science field and the recent technologies being used in their daily life.
The event was attended by 57 students from 27 high schools in north Lebanon (Koura, Zgharta, Tripoli, Akkar, Batroun, and Jbeil).
The CS Day started at 09:30 with Dr. Amine Bitar, chairperson of the Computer Science Department, welcoming the attendees in Fares Auditorium. Dr. Bitar explained the goal behind the event and addressed the relation between the rapid expansion of today’s technologies and the market needs for innovative and motivated developers. Dr. Bitar also highlighted the different areas under Computer Science that might interest students.
He spoke about the advantages of studying computer science specifically at the University of Balamand where students can benefit from the offered services: classrooms equipped with computers, a small number of students per class, courses coupled with practical laboratory sessions, the many links with computing companies, and the opportunity to meet experts who are invited to teach a number of senior courses.
Following Dr. Bitar’s presentation, Mr. Joe Chahoud, co-founder and managing director of the K&C Software Company, took the students through a presentation on steps to develop mobile and game applications. He presented statistics on the increasing demands on technology, and the market needs for interesting and new web, mobile and game applications.
After breakfast, Computer Science students presented three demonstrations on how to build and develop web applications using Wix Website Builder (presented by Mr. Abdou Abboud), develop Mobile Application using App Inventor (presented by Mr. Mazen Wafai), and game developing using Unity game Engine (presented by Mr. Gaetan Osman).
The high school students then moved to the Department Labs for a practice session of 2 hours. Practice sessions allowed students to develop a website, mobile application, and game application under the help and assistance of senior students from the Department.
A survey was conducted at the end of the practice session where students showed great interest in learning and creating new applications in the computer science field. A number of them showed interest in a planned summer camp that will offer them the ability and chance to work on programming tools and gain supplementary training in developing applications.
All of this was topped by lunch prepared and served by the THM team and the day was adjourned at 3:30 p.m. following a ceremony where visiting students received their participation certificates.
