The 7th LSMS International Conference
on Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics and The Lebanese Society for Mathematical Sciences (LSMS) organized the 7th LSMS International Conference on Mathematics on April 20th and 21st, 2017 at UOB’s Main Campus.

The ceremony started with the Lebanese National Anthem and the UOB Anthem in the presence of Dr. Michel Najjar, Vice-President for Development, Administration and Public Relations and Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, representing President Salem, Dr. Jihad Attieh Dean of the Faculty of Sciences, Dr. Rachel Hobeika Kallas, President of LSMS, in addition to many professors from UOB and other universities, students, and conferees.

Dr. Hanna Greige, Chairman of the Department of Mathematics welcomed the attendees emphasizing the importance of Mathematics since the dawn of human civilization to the present. He insisted on the importance of research in Mathematics and he encouraged colleagues to spread Mathematical knowledge quoting the French Mathematician Poisson: “Life is good for two things: discovering Mathematics and teaching Mathematics”.

Dr.Rachel Hobeika Kallas, LSMS President, expressed her gratitude to UOB for hosting this conference, CNRS, the conferees, and the scientific and organizing committees. She pointed to the importance of such kind of meetings as a forum for scientific exchange.

Dr. Michel Najjar stressed the beauty of Mathematics. He gave the example of Euler’s equation e^iπ+1=0 as the most beautiful equation in Mathematics, in its depth and simplicity. He compared the beauty of Mathematics to the beauty of music, stating that Mathematics to the reason is as music to the soul. He wished the participants a very successful conference describing them as true artists working with the purest form of art, and quoting Carl Friederich Gauss: “Mathematics if the queen of sciences” and saying “to us, the sciences is the corner of any university”. (Full speech of Dr Najjar)

The conference comprised 20 presentations, among which 5 were presented by international speakers. The presentations were divided into three sessions. The conference was attended by about 120 participants that included professors and students from various national universities.

Professor Azmy Ackleh, Dean of Sciences at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, USA, started the first session with the keynote presentation entitled: “Population models with discrete or continuous trait spaces: Competitive exclusion or coexistence?”.

The second session started with Professor Marc Massot from Ecole Polytechnique, Paris, France, with the keynote presentation entitled: “Adaptive time-space algorithms for simulations of multi-scale reaction waves”.

The third session started with Professor Gilles Ducharme, Université de Montpellier, France with the key-note presentation entitled: “Goodness-of-fit of statistical models: The smooth test paradigm”.
