Engineering Student Rached Off to Los Angeles

Graduate civil engineering student Rached Rached was one of four Lebanese students selected to participate in the LABSC engineering training program in Los Angeles this coming September.

This opportunity comes in the wake of a training program with the city of Los Angeles issued by the Los Angeles- Beirut Sister Cities (LABSC) committee who selected the four students to visit Los Angeles for a two-week engineering training program and to attend the one-day conference on civic engagement and citizen diplomacy.

The program was a result of a student exchange program co-lead by the LABSC board members who selected four senior graduate students from three Lebanese universities: UOB, AUB, and LAU.

In addition to the student’s engineering training program, LABSC will provide students with the opportunity to participate in a conference covering the topics of civic engagement and citizen diplomacy.

Rached was selected following an interview process. He describes this opportunity "as one of its kind."  The city of Los Angeles, "is one of the most important cities worldwide hosting many bridges and structural scales that tame its landscape."

While Los Angeles is prone to earthquakes, Rached is looking forward to explore structures that are resistant to earthquakes and visiting various construction sites. Rached points out that the exchange program is designed to offer significant experience in civil and environmental engineering, as well as encouraging dialogue on civic engagement.

“In the OSHA training, I am going to participate in, I will be able to learn about occupational safety and health administration to ensure safe and healthful working environment on site,”  says Rached.

Involved in a series of community service activities on campus, Rached is the vice president of the  UOB chapter of the American Society for Civil Engineers (ASCE), and has organized a number of related activities and social events. He also claimed third place in the ACI (American Concrete Institute) Egg Protection Device Competition.
