France 24 Journalism Workshops

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences has initialed an agreement with France 24 whereby the international news channel will offer workshops for Balamand journalism students, starting next year. The agreement also stipulates that two students will have the opportunity to intern at the station in Paris. The announcement of the agreement was made by Dr. George Dorlian, Dean of the Faculty of Arts And Social Sciences.

“We are very pleased with this initiative,” said Dorlian, “first, because the workshop that will be offered by this news channel will be of the highest professional standards, with staff coming from France for this purpose.” The second reason, continued Dorlian, “is that two of the students will have the opportunity to train with the station in Paris.”

The two students who will be nominated for the internship will be offered return air fare to Paris, plus a modest monthly stipend for the duration of their stay. France 24 broadcasts news, and documentary reports in French, English and Arabic, and has since its launch at the end of 2006 carved a significant position in the very competitive news mediascape. It currently employs close to 280 journalists, and its budget is approximately 100 million euros a year.

“This is an opportunity for our students to enjoy exposure to international professionals and learn from them,” said Dorlian. The workshops will be primarily open to graduate students in the Mass Communication program, but the department is also considering whether it should make them available to select BA students. No date has yet been agreed for the workshops, said Dr. Ramez Maluf, head of the Department of Mass Communication, but one possibility would be between semesters or during the early part of the summer.
