Balamand awarded the trophy in the GIS Day 2016

The Civil and Environmental Engineering Department and the Geographic Information System Center (GISC) jointly participated in the GIS Day 2016, hosted by the Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) Lebanon, when the University of Balamand team was awarded the trophy by ESRI Lebanon in recognition of their work and contribution to the success of the GIS Day.

The GIS Day is celebrated annually worldwide during the Geography Awareness Week, which was launched by the National Geographic Magazine and supported by ESRI, the world leader in GIS research, development and solutions. The theme of this year’s event at the international level was “Discovering the World through GIS”.

Contributors coming from several disciplines and markets, Education, Construction, NGOs, and the Government, among others, participated in the event. Three presenters had the chance to communicate to peers their best practices, successes, and innovative applications. These presenters were rigorously selected from more than twenty-five participants.

The University of Balamand was the sole presenter from the educational sector, represented by Vanessa Rizk, Johnny Malek, and Joe Farah, from the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department. Their presentation, entitled “Quantifying the Energy Provided by Photovoltaic Cell Panels Using GIS”, was very well received by the GIS community.

The success of the project was achieved through a synergy between the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department and the GIS Center, under the joint supervision of the architect and engineer Joe Rizk and Dr Amal Iaaly.
Our congratulations to the UOB team!
