UOB Hosts IEEE Grand Tech 2017 – Lebanon

IEEE Grand Tech is a regional IEEE Computer Society initiative aimed at holding conferences that create platforms for sharing of experiences and insights between technology pioneers and engineering students. This year, the national version of IEEE Grand Tech was held at the University of Balamand on April 8, 2017. 

The conference brought together distinguished professionals, researchers, and entrepreneurs who shared their experiences and current work in computing technologies. The themes of IEEE-GT Lebanon 2017 were cybersecurity, IoT, and technology entrepreneurship.

More than 200 students from different Lebanese universities attended the event that was held in Nahyan auditorium. The opening session began with a word from Dr. Elie Karam, Assistant to the Dean of Engineering welcoming the participants on behalf of Dr. Michel Najjar, Vice President for Administration, Development, and Public Affairs and Dean of the Faculty of Engineering. Then, Lyne Sidawi, Chair of the IEEE Student Branch at Balamand showcased the UOB Student Branch’s achievements and thanked the participants, speakers, and sponsors. Dr. Walid Karam, Conference Chair and Chair of the IEEE Computer Society Lebanon Section also addressed the crowd stressing the importance of the conference themes and the opportunities they present for future work and research. Dr. Bashar El-Hassan, Vice Chair of the IEEE Lebanon Section thanked the University of Balamand for hosting and organizing the conference, and delivered a message on behalf of the IEEE Lebanon Section. 

Mr. Marc Nader made a keynote speech at the conference. Mr. Nader is Chief Operations Officer at Data Consult a leading IT services provider in Lebanon and CEO of EXEO. Mr. Nader spoke of the speed of advancement in technology and the roles, opportunities, and challenges of future technologists. He placed a special focus on the Internet of Things speaking of the transformation it will create in technology.  

The first conference panel focused on technology entrepreneurship, while the  second panel focused on IoT. 


A poster session showcasing the research on conference themes that UOB students are currently engaged in was held, where faculty members from all universities were asked to take part in  the evaluation process. 

The afternoon session included a specialized workshop by General Bakayev on Cybersecurity. The goal of the workshop was to impart knowledge, awareness, and safe practices in terms of personal and enterprise cybersecurity on participants.
In his concluding remarks, Dr. Karam thanked the conference sponsors and partners, and the Order of Engineers and Architects in Tripoli. 

The conference was held in close cooperation between the department of computer engineering at UOB, the IEEE Computer Society – Lebanon, and the IEEE Student Branch.
