WWI Impact on Palestine

Professor Mahmoud Haddad of the Department of History participated this month in an International Conference in London on "World War I and Its Impact on Palestine."

Professor Haddad presented a background paper on "Palestine and the Eastern/Western Question Before WWI," discussing the historical antecedents of the Zionist project emphasizing that the establishment of Israel was the result of two diametrically opposed European trends: One that had pro-Jewish sentiments in Western Europe and another that had anti-Jewish sentiments in Eastern Europe and Russia.

Both trends, he argued, perceived that their strategic national and /or religious interests would be served by building a wedge state in the heart of the Arab World.

A link to his paper will be available soon.
