Home to the Nour Fares Collection

The Issam Fares Library Learning Center is home to a unique and rare collection of books that used to be part of the personal collection of the former ambassador of Lebanon to the UNESCO Camille Abou Sawan.

The collection was bought in 1993 from the Sotheby’s auction in London by Hala and Issam Fares and was donated to the University of Balamand Libraries in the name of their daughter Nour Fares. The official opening of the Issam Fares Library Learning Center will take place on May 20, 2017, a library that houses the treasures of knowledge including the books donated by Fares.

The topics covered are not limited to Lebanon, Syria, Palestine and the Levant only, they also cover part of Africa, Asia Minor, and Europe. Some examples include: travel books covering the social aspects of different sects in the region, stories from Qannoubine valley in the year 1596, the negotiations with the Vatican after the Florence treaty in 1455, books by Lamartine the famous French poet, and the Journey of Prince Fakhereddine the second in Toscana.
