Medical Center Foundation Stone

In a ceremony on June 26, in the presence of His Beatitude John X, President Elie Salem, and Dr. Bahij Arbid representing the Minister of Health Wael Abou Faour, the University of Balamand laid the foundation stone for the University Medical Center.
“We are gathered here,” said His Beatitude, “to announce the establishment of this center, that is an extension to the University of Balamand, in order to further meet its needs in medical education, and to expand the scope of its services in this region.”  Both the University and the hospital will provide health services and “attend to the intellectual and health needs of our communities in both body and soul.”

In his welcoming speech, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine Dr. Camille Nassar described his participation at the unfolding of this first step in the construction of the center as a “great honor,” particularly as he had been witness to the birth and evolution of the Balamand Medical School, which has become “a reference in medical education” in Lebanon.

Laying the foundation stone for the University hospital “wouldn’t have been possible,” said Dr. Nassar, “without the support of His Beatitude John X, who had a vision to build a hospital to serve the needs of his community.”
The hospital, added Nassar, designed according to American Facility Guidelines Institute standards, and in line with the Joint Commission for International Accreditation standards, will offer a full range of outpatient and inpatient health services.

Dr. Arbid addressed the status of the health sector in Lebanon saying that the University of Balamand Medical Center will present “a boost to healthcare in Lebanon, and in the north of the country in particular.” He praised the University of Balamand for its commitment to developing quality education in a variety of medical disciplines.

Addressing the crowd, President Salem said that the Medical Center, which “is born with the unstinting support of his Beatitude Patriarch John X,” will first consist of a building that will serve as a general hospital, to be followed by other buildings for the varying specializations of medicine, and “to become eventually a medical town,” committed to both care and research.
