Nursing clinical training in a center for the elderly

Second year nursing students concluded this years’ 45 hours of clinical training as part of their Nursing Care of the Elderly course in the Dar Hamilat El Tib center with a day of activities in which residents were involved in games aiming at developing their memory, social, and psychomotor capacities.

The day was organized away from the center where the elderly had their lunch and time for entertainment with the students and staff. At the end of the day, the students shared with the elderly a photo slideshow that featured memorable moments during their training. The elderly were seen to enjoying themselves playing or interacting with the students and other residents.

The clinical training in the center provided an opportunity for students to interact with the elderly, acquaint themselves with their needs, and deliver individual centered care. Besides their daily care, the students developed tools that help residents get oriented. They developed signs on the floors, identification photos on doors, and a calendar for each room.

“It was not just students working for the elderly, rather it was an occasion to witness how professional nurses work with the elderly and in their home. It is not the classical image of the nurse providing only medications and wound care,” said Ms. Aline Khoury, director of Dar Hamilat El Tib.

The experience “was not only a great opportunity for students’ learning but also for nurturing the collaboration between the Nursing Program and health care institutions in the community at large and in promoting quality of life and care for the elderly,” said Dr. Sabbagh, assistant director of the Nursing Program at the main campus.
