Hala and Kafaa: Off to Paris

Following their participation in an intensive news broadcast workshop, MCOM students Hala Mirza and Kafaa Msaed have been offered the opportunity to take part in a paid three-month internship at the Paris headquarters of the news station France 24.

Nine MCOM students took part in the workshop conducted by Paris-based France 24 news anchor and reporter Melissa Bell, who was “very impressed by the enthusiasm, commitment and talent of the students.”

During the workshop, students had to produce their own TV news coverage of a number of subjects of their choice, and do so from A to Z, including scripting the coverage, speaking to camera, and editing the footage. Students were also responsible for the camera work.

While Ms. Bell said she believed “all of the students could be interns at France 24,” the final selection was made by a jury that convened specially for the occasion. In addition to Ms. Bell, the jury included the CEO of France 24, Marc Saikali, Tancrede de la Morinerie from the French Embassy, as well as Dr. Ramez Maluf and Dr. Josiane el Khoury from the MCOM Department.

Hala, who has just completed her sophomore year in MCOM, and Kafaa, an MA student, will be both invited to intern at France 24 for three months. They will receive a monthly stipend during their stay and their return airfare to Paris.

“This was truly a wonderful experience for the students, most of whom described it as the best course they have taken so far at the University,” said Dr. Maluf. “We certainly plan to repeat this offer next summer.”
