UOB is working towards launching a Doctorate in Business Administration

Under the co-tutelle de thèse system, and based on an agreement with IAE Lyon Business School, University of Lyon 3 – Jean Moulin, in France, the Faculty of Business and Management is making plans to run a Doctorate in Business Administration program.  The DBA program is designed for experienced individuals and practitioners who are interested in professional growth and applied research and hold a Master’s degree in business related fields.

“This strategic move was identified three years ago upon the completion of the Faculty’s strategic plan. The Faculty aimed to diversify its offerings and to focus on research with impact and relevance. It plans to do so by innovating and by strengthening academic partnerships with internationally credible institutions,” explains Dean Karim Nasr.

The program will be offered through a partnership with IAE Lyon Business School, University of Lyon 3 – Jean Moulin, in France. Students will be asked to attend sessions in Balamand and in Lyon and carry out applied doctoral-level research.  The plan is for graduates to receive dual degrees, one from Balamand and one from Lyon 3.

“Our partner is a recognized Higher Education Institution worldwide. One of its research centers is known for a research methodology - Socio-Economic Approach to Management,” says Dr. Nasr adding that this approach is “diagnostic in nature, is based on scientific observations, uses qualimetrics and focuses on hidden costs.” The action-based research promises to improve organizations’ efficiency and effectiveness thus improving performance, says Dr. Nasr.

The difference between a doctorate and a PhD, explains the dean, is that a PhD focuses on theory while the DBA focuses on applied research. “This program,” he says, “in addition to presenting, qualitative and quantitative methods of research and focusing on a superb methodology (SEAM), it emphasizes topics such as cross cultural management, organizational behavior and strategy.”

By obtaining a DBA, experienced business professionals can grow into leadership positions in their line of work and can also become consultants, says Dr. Nasr.

“The mission of the DBA program is to provide business executives with competencies needed to carry out scientific observations in business administration settings.” The program, says Dr. Nasr, aims to equip participants with advanced research skills and qualifications and it achieves its goals by a synergetic partnership between the University of Balamand and Jean Moulin University.

Taught in English, the program responds to the mission of the University of Balamand in advancing knowledge and pushing its frontiers. “Faculty members at Balamand, will co-advise DBA students and will deliver instructional content,” says Dr. Nasr.
