Sensitization Training on the RuralInvest (RIV) Methodology

The Environmental and Energy Economics Program at the Institute of the Environment at the University of Balamand and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in collaboration with the Department of Agricultural Engineering Technology at the Issam Fares Faculty of Technology, University of Balamand, organized a three-day Sensitization Training Course on the RuralInvest (RIV) Methodology and Software on 4, 5 and 6 October, 2016, on the University’s main campus in Al-Koura. The training was provided by FAO’s RIV experts, Mr Julien Vallet, Ms Shaza Saker, Mr Gunther Feiler, and Mr Bar Zecharya, and was attended by fifteen participants from different Lebanese private and public institutions.

The first day of the training consisted of an introduction to RIV, which is a free toolkit developed by FAO and comprising training courses, manuals and customized software for the preparation of successful rural development projects. The tool is used to “prepare investment projects and business plans in a participatory, iterative and decentralized way for the use of communities, entrepreneurs and field technicians of ministries, projects and financial institutions, in support of rural investments and agribusinesses development”.

The second and third days offered practical guidance on RIV principles and use, based on genuine case-studies. Presentations were given by trainers, followed by individual and group working sessions enlivened by fruitful discussion and exchange of know-how.

The Training Course was praised by participants, ninety percent of whom evaluated the overall quality and usefulness of the training at five on a one-to-five scale, indicating their high interest in mainstreaming RIV in the student curriculum.
