Investment Opportunities in Renewable Energies

In collaboration with the NGO Save Energy Plant Trees (SEPT), the Faculty of Business and Management hosted a seminar on Investment Opportunities in Renewable Energies led by Mr. Pierre El Khoury, general director at the Lebanese Center for Energy Conservation (LCEC) on May 26..

In his welcoming speech, Dr. Karim Nasr, dean of the Faculty of Business and Management said that “advancement in technology and in materials engineering have not materialized into a significant increase in efficiency and have made these systems unaffordable and non-sustainable. Our speaker today will shed light on Lebanon’s plans to making these systems feasible and making this sector a promising economic driver.”

Mr. Khoury discussed the vision and national approach for renewable energy and how the Lebanese government set a plan in 2009 in order to rely on renewable energy to the tune of 12 percent by the year 2020. He shared with the audience the national targets by 2020 and addressed the National Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Action (NEEREA) which allows private sector entities to apply for subsidized loans for any type of EE and/or RE projects. In essence, approved entities can obtain loans at 0.6% interest over a period of 14 years.

Mr. Khoury concluded his talk by saying that Lebanon is getting closer to achieving its renewable energy targets and that more jobs will likely be available in this sector.
