HR, a Strategic Partner?

The Faculty of Business and Management organized a panel discussion entitled: “HR, a Strategic Partner” that brought together Human Resources professionals from across Lebanon, as well as faculty members and students from the University of Balamand. Experiences were shared on the strategic nature of HR practices and how they contribute to bottom-line results.

In his welcoming speech, Dr. Karim Nasr, dean of the Faculty of Business and Management, emphasized the changing roles of HR managers and the need for them to be versed with advanced skills related to people behavior, to human development and to keeping their organizations competitive. He stated that HR managers have made the transition from their traditional record keeping role to one that is integrated within the organization, strategy-based, holistic in approach and in coverage, initiative-driven, and no longer a cost center but rather a value creator.

Dr. Samer Nakhle, assistant professor of HRM, highlighted the importance of human resource management to organizations by featuring eleven key areas. He then presented the Master in HRM program offered at the University of Balamand.

Other speakers included:
  • Mr. Nahed Khairallah, CEO and founder of Dynamic Recruit, who showed why it is important to brand the company as an employer of choice.
  • Mr. Elias el Hayek, HR manager and training manager at the Four Seasons hotel in Beirut, who addressed the main characteristics needed in a candidate to be hired in the future.
  • Dr. Antoine Eid, managing partner of Leadership Consultants, who conducted a workshop about brain science and performance management through a series of activities and experiential exercises.
  • Dr. Wafaa Hallasou, managing director of BCTS, who stressed the importance of training and development to any company.
  • Mr. Toufic el Chaar, human capital engineer at Aghthia group, who addressed the human capital engineering as a business growth enabler.
  • Mr. Marc Hamdan, CEO of HR Smart, talked about the return on investment of talent management.
  • Mr. Firas el Banna,professional development facilitator at PeopleSoft, who discussed how organizations should enact needs-based training strategies under economic hardships.
Finally, Dr. Samer Nakhle synthesized the work of the panel stressing on the importance of changing the perceptions towards the importance of the HR department and encouraging HR professionals in companies to prove to management that their department deserves to be represented in Board Meetings, alongside other strategic planners.​​
