International Engagement with UNFCCC

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Secretariat* recently certified the eligibility of Dr George Mitri to participate in the technical analysis of biennial update reports (BURs) from non-Annex I Parties** under the International Consultation and Analysis (ICA) process.

Dr Mitri , Director of the Biodiversity Program at the Institute of the Environment (IOE), has served as greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory review expert for the technical review of GHG inventories from Parties included in Annex I to the Climate Change Convention. In recognition of his experience in the area of GHG inventories, Dr Mitri was invited to participate as a reviewer for the Annex I annual submissions in 2014. He served as a Land Use, Land Use Change, and Forestry (LULUCF) expert for the centralized review that was conducted in Bonn, Germany, in September 2014.

Participation in ICA and conducting technical reviews, says Dr Mitri, represents an opportunity to enhance the University of Balamand’s contribution to future national reports on GHG emissions and removals, and to strengthen the capability of IOE in addressing the various aspects of national measures to mitigate and facilitate adequate adaptation to climate change.

**  Annex I Parties include the industrialized countries that were members of the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) in 1992, plus countries with economies in transition (the EIT Parties), including the Russian Federation, the Baltic States, and several Central and Eastern European States. Non-Annex I Parties are mostly developing countries.
