UOB and LAU Sign Agreement

The University of Balamand and the Lebanese American University concluded an agreement to establish research and educational exchange programs and to promote the development of joint studies, research and training activities of mutual interest.

On June 4, a delegation from UOB headed by President Elie A. Salem visited LAU and met with President Joseph Jabra and a large number of LAU officials. In his welcoming speech, Dr Jabra praised the fast rise of the University of Balamand within a record time and expressed strong enthusiasm for establishing an official agreement with UOB.  President Salem thanked LAU for hosting the event and reiterated his admiration of the high national and international reputation of LAU under the leadership of President Jabra. He indicated that UOB will do everything possible to insure the success of this venture and emphasized the role of faculty members and students in giving real sense to the agreement.

Among several other topics, the research collaboration and exchange program will include Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, Basic Translational Sciences, Clinical Pharmacology, Molecular and Cellular Biology. A major aspect of the agreement is to get graduate students to participate in journal clubs and research seminars conducted at both institutions and to develop faculty exchange programs where they can teach part or entire courses at either institution. In addition, and perhaps most importantly, the agreement will open the possibility for use of utilities and facilities, along with any other services that are available at either institution, by students and faculty members participating in the exchange/research program throughout the duration of the Agreement.

Ultimately, the agreement will allow LAU together with UOB, to work together on developing Masters and Ph.D. programs tailored to their interests in the various scientific fields.

The Ceremony was concluded by mutual signatures followed by a cocktail. President Jabra then accompanied the UOB delegation on a tour of the newly built Gilbert and Rose-Marie Chagoury Health Sciences Center which houses the schools of Medicine, Pharmacy and Nursing at LAU.
