Water Resources: Challenges and Opportunities

On March 3, the Faculty of Business & Management, in collaboration with the NGO Save Energy Plant Trees  (SEPT) organized a seminar on “Water Resource Scarcity: Challenges and Opportunities.”

In his welcoming speech, Dr. Manal Nader, director of the Institute of the Environment, showcased the role of the institute in fresh water management and in proposing solutions to water shortages.

Dr. Nader said that Lebanon faces problems in the water sector, and stressed the need to implement measures to better benefit from its resources, and for the Lebanese to identify problem areas in order to help the government find solutions. The Department of Environmental Sciences at the University, said Dr. Nader, offers courses related to water management that work in that direction.

In turn, the president of  SEPT, Pierre Haddad, addressed the importance of preserving the environment and the appropriate use of water resources, and the challenges and opportunities in spreading an environmental culture, through the planting of trees and promoting eco-friendly behavior.

The Former General Director of the Litani River Authority Nasser Nassrallah addressed the problems facing the water sector that are related to a lack of waste water treatment plans. A significant part of the problem, said Mr. Nasrallah, was that there is no treatment of the water pollution.   He also showcased the importance of the Karun dam, one of the many large power dams on the Karun River.

Hyam Mallat, professor of environmental and water legislation at St Joseph University, discussed the geopolitical importance of water resources, reminding the audience that those issues are at the core of the conflicts in the Middle East.
