National Awareness Seminar on ISO 14046 Water Footprint

Dr Rima Manneh, Assistant Professor in the Chemical Engineering Department, was selected as a national expert for Lebanon on Water Footprint (ISO 14046) within the ISO MENA Star Project. One of the roles assigned to such experts is the raising of awareness through seminars and workshops on Life Cycle Assessment, in particular on the Water Footprint of products, processes, or services.

Dr Manneh gave a presentation on Life Cycle Assessment and its relation to Water Footprint during the ISO/Lebanese Standards Organization (LIBNOR) National Awareness Seminar on ISO 14046 Water Footprint. The Seminar was held on Monday, 16 January 2017, in Crowne Plaza-Hamra, under the patronage of His Excellency the Minister of Industry, Dr Hussein Hajj Hassan.

Dr Manneh, who gained her doctorate from Polytechnique Montreal in 2011, pursued her research on Life Cycle Impact Assessment at the International Reference Center for the Life Cycle of Products, Processes, and Services (CIRAIG), and has many publications in peer-reviewed journals, including:  Environmental Science and Technology, Journal of Cleaner Production, Energy and Buildings, Lebanese Science Journal, Integrated Environmental Assessment and Management, and The Science of the Total Environment.

The main objectives of the National Seminar were to raise “awareness and understanding among authorities and industry and other stakeholders” in Lebanon “about Water Footprint, related business opportunities, existing best practices and risks, as well as to raise awareness of the need of a strategic vision about Water Footprint and Life Cycle Assessment, with regard to both trade and business and competence development”.

The Seminar was organized within the framework of the three-year ISO MENA STAR Project “Strengthen Institutional Infrastructure on Standards and Regulations to Support Business and Industry (MENA STAR)”, which is being implemented by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA). It was presented by the four national experts, Dr Manneh from UOB, Mrs El-Hussein from LIU, Mr Metni from WASTE, and Mr Berro from Beta Engineering, with the assistance of an international expert, Dr Boulay from CIRAIG, Canada.

Dr Manneh is currently working on the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of solar energy systems and green roofs for Lebanon and supervising masters and PHDs on these topics. LCA is a methodology used to evaluate the potential environmental impacts of a product, process, or service throughout its life cycle, i.e., from the raw material extraction until its end-of-life or disposal. Some of the applications of LCA are: product development and improvement, strategic planning, marketing, and public policy making.
