Online Journalism

Balamand, 18 September 2017: The Department of Mass Media and Communication at the University of Balamand has joined forces with MedMedia, to work towards developing Online Journalism for youth. “This is an important step towards the growth of the new media and online journalism market in Lebanon”, stated the Head of the Department of Mass Media and Communication, Dr. Sharif Abdunnur.

MedMedia is a European Union-funded project being implemented by a consortium led by BBC Media Action and comprising the International Federation of Journalists, (IREX) Europe, the Blanquerna School of Communications and the Jordan Media Institute.

The project will pair the Department of Mass Media and Communication at the University of Balamand with the School of Media at Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) in Ireland. The European partner will help Balamand in developing the needed structure and design for an online social newspaper for University’s youth.

The project was recently launched and the visit of Dr Michael Foley - Professor Emeritus at the School of Media, DIT was a first of several implementation steps towards accomplishing this initiative. The launching of the online social newspaper of the University of Balamand will be the successful outcome of this fruitful collaboration with its European Partners.

“The online social newspaper is a unique and important step towards the growth of the new media journalism sector in general and for the technical know-how of our students at an international level. This will be one of several other steps lead by the Department and a big leap forward for digital journalism as well as a first of its kind project in Lebanon, said Dr. Sharif Abdunnur.
