UOB – Ma3bar at The LEAD

The LEAD@Chekka, the center for Leadership, Entrepreneurship, Advancement and Development, a joint initiative between Balamand , TamHolding, and Nevers Agglomération announced the start of its operation that includes providing a co-working space, incubating, and developing open source projects.

This center is intended to be a center for the technology and open innovation in North Lebanon.

Dr. Antoine Melki, University of Balamand Faculty member and Ma3bar coordinator stated that the idea of Lead was generated by the owner of the property. He was seeking help to start the project and was advised by the World Bank and LFE (Lebanon For Entrepreneurship) to contact the University of Balamand.

As a result, explained Dr. Melki, the University of Balamand was involved in this project, since the university is a leader among universities in Lebanon in entrepreneurial activities. Therefore, he said: “ an outlet is needed in the form of an incubator or similar entrepreneurial organizations”.

On Thursday November 9, 2017, The LEAD organized its first round table on “Open Source Software in North Lebanon” where contributors were Patrick Sinz, the LEAD executive director, Philip Khalaf, Collabora founder, Yemen Sayour, trainer at AUF-CNF Tripoli, and Fr. Antoine Melki,UOB faculty and Ma3bar Coordinator.

The event gathered academics, freelancers, entrepreneurs and experts from North.

After the presentation of the success story of Mr. Khalaf, as one of the Lebanese youth in the world, the round table concentrated on the state of open source software in Lebanon and the need of adopting it to keep the talents and support the entrepreneurial ecosystem.
