Medicine and Postgraduate Medical Studies

The Faculty of Medicine and Medical Sciences at the University of Balamand offers courses in basic Medical Sciences and Clinical Medicine leading to the M.D. Degree. The Faculty of Postgraduate Medical Education offers residency and fellowship programs in the following specialties: Anesthesiology and Reanimation, Medicine (Allergology, Cardiology, Dermatology, Endocrinology, Family Medicine, Gastroenterology, Geriatrics, Hematology-oncology, Nephrology, Neurology, Pneumology, Rheumatology), Obstetrics and Gynecology, Ophthalmology, Orthopedic Surgery, Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, Pathology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry and Psychology, Surgery (Cardiothoracic, General, Neuro, Pediatric, Plastic and Reconstructive, Urology, Vascular), and Radiology in addition to Medical laboratory. As a matter of policy, the Faculty approaches teaching, research, clinical training and service as interdependent components in a medical institution of higher learning.
Enrollment in the Faculty of Medicine has been growing at a rapid pace in the past few years at the M.D. level and reached 268 students and 151 for postgraduate specialization in 2013. This is all the more important since the Faculty is expanding its medical research in such fields as Gastroenterology, Neuroscience, Biochemistry and Medical Engineering, as well as hospital-based clinical trials in the different specialties like Cardiology, Orthopedic Surgery, Urology, Osteoporosis and Psychiatry. The Faculty also expanded its laboratory facilities for training, research and services to include Core Research, Cell-culture, Microbiology and Viral Studies laboratories.
While the basic Medical Sciences are taught at the main campus at Balamand, the Faculty uses St. Georges Hospital University Medical Center in Beirut for teaching Clinical Medicine and Postgraduate specializations. The St. George Health Complex, with its advanced facilities, has been critical in initiating the medical program and attracts students from Lebanon and the region. The University of Balamand is keenly aware of the need to have a training hospital on the main Balamand campus to attract students from the more underprivileged parts of Lebanon in Tripoli, Akkar and Al-Kurah, and to reach these communities where health and medical needs and services are not identical with those in Beirut. The Balamand campus also offers space for envisaged growth in teaching facilities, laboratories and research facilities. In addition to capital funds for buildings and grounds, the Faculties of medicine and postgraduate Medical Education at the University of Balamand are seeking additional funding over the coming years in the areas listed below:
1. Scholarships and Student Assistantships
2. Faculty Support
3. Visiting professors and academic exchange
4. Expanded and new laboratories
5. Medical Research
