19TH Century Family Bible Restored

On their wedding day, Elie and Phyllis Salem received a most precious and valuable gift. The Sells, Phyllis’ parents, presented the newlyweds with a nineteenth-century Bible that has been in the family for generations. Keen to preserve this legacy, President Salem entrusted the task of restoring the Bible to Saint Joseph of Damascus Manuscript Conservation Center at Our Lady of Balamand Patriarchal Monastery.

For two years, Fr. Hareth Ibrahim, the Director of the Manuscript Conservation Center, and his staff worked hard and long on
saving this treasured Book from the clutches of decades of use andcorrosion. The Manuscript Center was supported by  Mr. Juma al Majid, a leading philanthropist from Dubai and a major collector of rare books and manuscripts. Mr. al Majid provided training to the staff of our Center and provided it with modern equipment.

The Manuscripts Center works under the auspices of His Eminence Bishop Ghattas (Hazim), the Abbot of the historic Monastery of
Our Lady of Balamand. On March 10th, 2014, Bishop Ghattas and
Fr. Ibrahim presented the renovated Bible to President Salem and briefed him on the many projects now undertaken by the Center.

President Salem thanked them for the distinguished effort on his family Bible, and expressed his admiration for the high level of competence manifested by the head of the Center and its staff.
He thanked Bishop Ghattas for his interest in renovating manuscripts and for keeping close contact with Mr. Juma al Majid, one of the most prominent patrons of rare books and manuscripts.
