Removing
Items From Reserve
1.
Introduction:
It
is the Library's practice to place on Reserve materials
that are required readings for courses taught at the
University of Balamand. Reserve items are kept behind
the circulation desk and circulate on a short loan
basis. Placing required readings on reserve allows many
students to access each item within a relatively short
time period.
The
UOB loan period for reserve materials:
Desk
Reserve: two-hour loan period
Overnight
Reserve: checked out overnight and is due at 9:00 a.m.
the next morning
Recommended
or suggested readings are left in the open stacks which
allows those students doing more serious research to
check them out for 2 weeks at a time, subject to recall
if needed.
The
Library will not violate copyright regulations and will
put on reserve original copies of books. We will place
on reserve photocopies of journal articles, chapters of
out-of-print books, etc. if supplied by the instructor.
Photocopies should be placed in clearly labeled manila
folders or bound. All materials so supplied will be
returned to the instructor at the end of the semester.
2.
Basic procedures: Faculty members should submit all
requests to the Circulation Librarian.
2.1
Deadlines: All
materials to be placed on reserve should be submitted
two (2) weeks before the materials are assigned.
2.2
Reserves Request Form:
Upon handing in material for reserve, a copy of the
Reserve Request Form should be handed in to the
Circulation Librarian.

2.3
Getting materials to the Reserve Desk:
Each faculty member should bring all materials that are
normally shelved in the UOB Libraries, plus photocopied
articles and personal materials to the Reserve Desk.
It
is a great help to the Reserves staff if you bring all
materials for a course at one time.

2.4
Items at other UOB libraries:
Materials from other UOB libraries may be placed on
reserve by listing them on your reserve form. Please be
sure to indicate their locations and the staff will
retrieve these materials. Items may be placed on reserve
at the reserve desks at all UOB libraries (on and off
campus).
2.5
Journal articles: Please make
photocopies of specific articles to place on reserve and
bring them in transparent envelope with your reserve
request form. Photocopies are relatively fragile and are,
therefore, likely to show some wear and tear from heavy
use. Normally the library will accept no more than two
copies of a photocopied item for reserve.
Whole
periodicals, either bound or unbound, which belong to
UOB Libraries may not be placed on reserve. Photocopies
may be placed on "desk reserve" only.
2.6
Personal copies: Personal
copies of books and other materials may be placed on
reserve. For your protection, a security device will be
placed in every personal copy placed on reserve. Because
personal copies of books placed on reserve receive heavy
use by many different people, they may show some signs
of wear from usage.
2.7
Faculty checkout of reserve items:
Faculty members who check out materials from the Reserve Desk are urged to return them on the due date
if the books are not a part of their own reserve lists.
If you wish to keep materials that are on another
professor's reserve list for longer than the specified
borrowing period, please obtain advance permission from
the professor who has the materials on reserve.
2.8
Removing Items From Reserve:
Materials are removed from reserve at the end of each
semester. Instructors may also request removal of items
from their course reserve at anytime during the
semester. At the end of each semester, all materials on
reserve must be removed or renewed for the following
semester.
Toward
the end of the semester, instructors will receive a
Release/Retain notification via e-mail from the library.
The faculty member should indicate whether the materials
are to be released or retained for the next term. If the
instructor does not return a Release/Retain form, the
materials will be removed from Reserve. All personal
materials will be returned to the instructor.
