To Request Off-Campus Access
Account
----------------
Introduction
As a student or a member of faculty or staff in the
University of Balamand, you are likely to spend a large
proportion of your time based in an academic/research
setting away from the University campus. The University
of Balamand Libraries recognizes the fact that physical
access to the University Library can often be extremely
impractical for you in these circumstances, so we try to
ensure that as many of our resources and services as
possible are accessible to you wherever you happen to
be. The main service we offer you remotely is access to
the Electronic Resources (databases, electronic books
and electronic journals).
----------------
----------------
Only current students and faculty affiliated with the
University of Balamand may access the electronic
databases remotely. This service is being extended to
Full-Time faculty members, Research Assistants,
Postgraduate students, Undergraduate students and staff.
These Guidelines apply to anyone using a computer
off-campus to connect to the University’s networked
electronic resources (online databases).
----------------
What are the general guidelines and policies of using
this service?
ØIt
is the responsibility of members of the University
community with remote access privileges to the
University's corporate network to ensure that their
remote access connection is given the same consideration
as the user's on-site connection to the University.
ØNo
“access for fee” options are available to non-UOB
individuals. Those not affiliated with the university
must directly contact a database or journal vendor to
arrange for personal access.
ØUsers
will not pass on, or allow any other person to use the
username and password assigned to them by the UOB
Library. Users
will adhere to the regulations governing the use of any
services which use usernames and passwords, whether
these services are controlled by the University of
Balamand or by some other organization.
ØUsers
use their EZProxy username and password only in
connection with the work of the University of Balamand.
Such work includes teaching, learning, research,
personal educational development, administration and
management of the business of the University of
Balamand, or development work associated with any of the
above. It does not include consultancy or services
leading to commercial gain, or work of direct benefit to
the employer of students on industrial placement or
part-time courses paid for by the student’s employer.
ØUsers
will ensure that the requirements will be maintained of
the agreements, contracts and licenses under which UOB
subscribes to computerized services. The electronic
resources offered by UOB Libraries are produced by
commercial publishers and academic societies, and their
availability is dependent upon the Library and UOB
entering into legal agreements limiting access. The
agreements typically limit use of the resources to UOB
students, staff, and faculty.
ØUsers
will ensure the security and confidentiality of the
services made available, and will not make any further
copies of information from them or knowingly permit
others to do so, or supply copies of information from
them to others, unless permitted to do so under the
relevant license.
ØUsers
are responsible to ensure that family members do not
violate any of the University policies, do not perform
illegal activities, and do not use the access for
outside business interests. The University users bear
responsibility for the consequences should the access be
misused.

Just click on the database you wish to log onto after
following the procedure below:
1. Currently enrolled UOB students, faculty, and staff
can access electronic resources by requesting that their
off-campus accounts be activated:http://www.balamand.edu.lb/english/Library/remoteaccessform.html
2. Please contact the
E-Resources Librarian
if you have a problem with
your Username or Password.
3. At this time whether on or off campus you will be
asked to enter a username and password. When accessing
resources, you will be redirected to a login page asking
for your username and password. Please follow the
instructions on the page.
----------------
What do I need in order to use EZProxy?
1. You need your EZProxy Username and Password
2. You will also need a PC with access to the internet
and a “Java-enabled” browser such as Internet Explorer
5.5+ or Mozilla Firefox.
3. EZProxy should require no special configuration on
your computer settings on your part
----------------
What resources can I access through
the EZProxy server?
1. The EZProxy system provides off-campus access to most
of the databases and electronic journals to which UOB
Libraries subscribe.
2. Owing to special restrictions imposed by some
vendors, there are a few online resources (e.g. UpToDate)
that are not accessible via EZProxy.
3. If you encounter a resource that you feel should be
accessible, please report it to
E-Resources Librarian.
----------------
1. Why do I receive this message: My username or
password was not correct and I can't log-in?
This often means that your log-in information has not
been activated, you typed incorrect information, or you
do not have access as current student, staff or faculty.
So you need to activate your account by filling out this
form:
http://www.balamand.edu.lb/english/Library/remoteaccessform.html
----------------
2. What if I logged in to EZproxy but nothing seems to
happen?
Please check these four settings in your browser:
2.1.
Popup blocker:
Disable pop-up blockers while you are accessing content
through EZproxy.
2.2.
Firewall:
If you see
"this page
cannot be displayed," it usually means a
firewall issue on your side. If you have installed
personal firewall software you need to allow access to
www.balamand.edu.lb
as a safe site.
2.3.
Cookies:
EZproxy and many databases/journals send "cookies" when
you connect to them to verify that you are an authorized
user. If your browser reports an error receiving a
"cookie," you have to enable them in your browser
settings. The default setting for most browsers will
accept EZproxy cookies without a problem. However, if
you changed it, you will see a blank page. Change
browser options to accept all cookies.
2.4.
JavaScript:
Again, the default setting for most browsers will work
well with EZproxy's JavaScript. However, if you changed
it, you will need to enable it again in order to access
the content.
----------------
3. What should I do if:
3.1. I can use it at home, but not at work?
Many corporate, government, and educational institutions
use firewalls for security purposes and block every port
other than standard web browser ports. Please ask the IT
support staff where you work to open port 80 for you.
Most technicians are happy to oblige.
----------------
3.2. I got a hostname error?
This means you tried to access a database or web site
that has not been configured through EZproxy. The
database company may have changed their web address or
it may not be a web site that requires EZproxy. Please
send the
EZproxy administrator
an email that includes the error message.
----------------
3.3."Page not found," "Cannot find server or DNS," or
browser waits and waits.
This usually means there is an issue in the UOB Campus
Network. Please send the
EZproxy administrator
an email that includes the
error message.
----------------
3.4. If you have other questions not listed here.
Please contact the EZproxy administrator by email (eddy.nini@balamand.edu.lb)
or by phone (06-930250 EXT. 3910).
----------------
4. I don't know my UCT username and password. How can I
find out?
All requests for EZProxy username/password assistance
should go to the
E-Resources Librarian.
Note: Additional information to verify your identity
may be requested.
----------------
5. Why don’t certain features, functions, or links in
the databases work when I'm using EZProxy?
Database vendors use a variety of programs on their web
sites and some of these make it difficult for the
EZProxy system to pass information between you and their
site. In addition, some databases and journals have
special conditions and restrictions. These appear on the
Databases and Journals lists on the UOB Libraries web
pages.
Here are some reasons why problems might occur:
5.1. EZProxy's configuration for the database needs to
be adjusted.
If certain features do not function when accessing the
resource from off campus, then EZProxy's configuration
may have to be adjusted to adapt to the database's
specifications.
----------------
5.2. The problem is with the vendor's site.
Occasionally there are problems on the vendor's site.
These are generally resolved fairly quickly once we make
the vendor aware of them.
----------------
5.3. The problem is with your browser's ability to
handle the site’s programming.
Problems could also be due to your browser not working
with the programming the database uses (e.g. Java,
JavaScript, or Active Server pages). Alternatively, your
browser's settings might need to be changed to enable
certain functionality. Sometimes a browser error occurs
that can't be resolved until you reboot your computer.
----------------
5.4. Certain content or features are not part of the
library's subscription.
In a few databases, the Libraries’ subscription does not
provide access to all features or content. In these
cases, you may get an error message or login screen.
Look for special conditions or restrictions noted next
to the resources’ names on the Databases list on the UOB
Libraries’ web site.
----------------
Please report any problems that you have in accessing
electronic resources to
E-Resources Librarian
----------------
6 What if I need help using an online database?
Most databases have a “Help” button that will give
specific information on how to use them. For additional
help, please contact the
E-Resources Librarian or any other Librarian in
one of the UOB Libraries.
