The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Balamand is pleased to announce that the ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineers) Student Chapter at the university has received a letter of recognition for its “exemplary services to the community” over the past year, 2020/2021. This letter from ASCE recognizes a year of hard work where ASCE student members and officers were actively engaged online and in the field in services to the community especially in the light of the devastating Beirut Blast on August 4th. In the wake of the blast, ASCE student members were on the ground cleaning the streets, helping the locals, and contributing to the technical assessment of buildings. These efforts crowned a year of social and technical engagements in conferences, community service campaigns, and other projects.

ASCE UOB Student Chapter Advisor Dr. Dana Nasr expressed her great pride in this achievement highlighting the hard work of the chapter officers and members during what was truly an unorthodox year with the sweeping pandemic and the resultant lockdowns. Dr. Nasr added: “The sudden move to the online environment presented an opportunity for our students to take part of conferences and events that usually require travel. I’m proud of our students and the great strides they made over the past year”.

Dean of Student Affairs Dr. Walid Moubayed commended the ASCE UOB Student Chapter on this important achievement which underlines the fact that our student community is actively engaged with its community and is playing its role as an agent of positive change. He said: “I’m proud of our ASCE chapter and their achievements and I look forward to working with them on their future projects.”

In turn, Vice President for Internationalization and Engagement and Dean of the Faculty of Engineering Prof. Rami Abboud congratulated the ASCE UOB Student Chapter on their achievements highlighting community service as an integral component of the noble profession of engineering. Prof. Abboud stated: “Our aim is always to push our students to engage with the community and to put their skills and knowhow to the public good in true testament to our motto: From Lab to Society”.
