between Orthodox Theology and Modern Culture

In the occasion of the feast of St. John of Damascus, the patron Saint of the Institute of Theology at the University of Balamand, the Institute organized a conference entitled "Thinking Modernity: Towards a Reconfiguration of the Relationship between Orthodox Theology and Modern Culture." Speakers from the United States, United Kingdom, Greece, France, Germany, and Finland gathered in Balamand to discuss this important theological subject for the Orthodox Church. The conference was attended by many lay theologians, bishops and priests of the Orthodox and Roman Catholic Church.

Title of Contributions and Names of Lecturers are as follows:

• Do we Meet Modernity with Out of Date Questions? Hermeneutical approach to the Dilemma” (Prof. Dr. Merja Merras, University of Joensuu, Finland).

• Returning to First Principles. Articulating Orthodox Theology in a Post-     Modern Context (Rev. Prof. Dr. John Behr, St Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary, USA).

• The Holy Spirit in the Life of the World. Dialectis of Universal and Particular (Rev. Prof. Dr. Emmanuel Clapsis, Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology, USA).

• Man and the Hermeneutics of Truth. Is An Ecumenical Anthropology Possible? (Dr. Daniel Munteanu, University of Bamberg, Germany).

• Une pensée théologique moderne? Impact du mouvement oecuménique sur la théologie orthodoxe (Michel Nseir, World Council of Churches, Geneva).

• L’apport de la modernité. Dialogue entre les religions (Rev. Prof. Dr. Georges Massouh, Saint John of Damascus Institute of Theology, Balamand-Lebanon).

• Ecumenical Statements (Rev. Fr.  Gaby Hachem, University of St. Jospeh, Lebanon)

بمناسبة عيد القدّيس يوحنّا الدمشقيّ، شفيع كلّية اللاهوت معهد القدّيس يوحنّا الدمشقيّ اللاهوتيّ في جامعة البلمند، أقام المعهد، بالتعاون مع كرسيّ اللاهوت الشرقيّ في جامعة فلهلم في مدينة منستَر (ألمانيا)، من 3 حتى 5 كانون الأوّل، مؤتمرًا في دير سيّدة البلمند حول "اللاهوت الأرثوذكسيّ والتفكّر في الحداثة"، حضره، إلى أساتذة المعهد وطلاّبه وحفنة من المهتمّين، متخصّصون في المجالات اللاهوتيّة المختلفة من معاهد اللاهوت الأرثوذكسيّة في الولايات المتّحدة، وبريطانيا، وفرنسا، وروسيا، واليونان، وفنلندا، وألمانيا. عرض المؤتمر، الذي عقد برعاية صاحب الغبطة البطريرك إغناطيوس الرابع (هزيم) وحضوره، لتحدّيات الحداثة وما بعد الحداثة على الصعد الفساريّة والانسانية والفنيّة. ركّزت المحاضرات والمداخلات التي ألقيت، كما والنقاشات التي دارت حولها، على أهمّية مخاطبة اللاهوت للإنسان في أحواله الحاضرة وشجونه، انطلاقًا من مفهوم الذات بعلاقتها مع البعدين الفرديّ والجماعيّ، إلى البيئة ودور الإنسان في المحافظة عليها من منطلق دينيّ، وكذلك الفنون وعلاقتها بنظرة الانسان الكليانيّة إلى العالم، وأهميّة قيام أطر جديدة للتفكير توائم ما تطرحه الأحوال الحاضرة من تحدّيات وذلك في أمانة تامّة إلى مبادئ الإيمان. اختتم المؤتمر أعماله بمداخلات حول أهمّية البعد المسكونيّ في طرح هذه المواضيع، ومركزيّة الحوار بين الأديان سبيلاً إلى مقاربة الحداثة.
