Newsletter Issue 04

WELCOME NOTE

Dear FHS alumni and friends,

I am delighted to share with you again the achievements of the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Balamand. Faculty recruitment remains a major priority at FHS and we have been successful in recruiting a number of PhD holder faculty and many part-timers for the four FHS academic departments. In this newsletter, we are profiling current faculty and two newcomers to the Balamandian community. I am also happy to report that we have made a number of strides towards our goal to achieve accreditation of our four academic programs. The nursing program has been approved for candidacy status of the BSN and MSN programs and the nutrition program has submitted all eligibility documents to start the self-study process for accreditation. Other programs will be following suit and are actively involved in submitting their pre-applications for accreditation. The department on community engagement (DOCE) has been very active in implementing the numerous community-funded projects throughout the country. Our International Advisory Board recommended the launch of the Center for Health Research, which has been active since September 2022, as well as the preparatory work to launch an Interdisciplinary PhD program in the future. Our FHS students have been brilliant in organizing a large number of activities at all three campus sites; the DEK campus activities are profiled in this newsletter.

We hope you will enjoy reading this newsletter and we look forward to sharing additional significant milestones in the near future.

Students Activities

Mr. Raymond Hajj
Ever since I joined the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) at the University of Balamand as a student in 2002, I felt drawn to our unique campus life. I feel proud to have been around to witness the history, development, and expansion of our university and our city, Beirut, with all the ups and downs, the festivals, the happy moments and, unfortunately, the tragedies. Over the years, besides being an instructor at FHS, I have had the pleasure of taking on several other administrative responsibilities.

Starting Fall 2022 – 2023, I was appointed as Campus Coordinator of the Office of Student Affairs (OSA) at the Dekwaneh Campus; a role very dear to me. Today, as an instructor at FHS and OSA Campus coordinator, I feel privileged to have the chance to contribute to shaping a unique campus life experience for all our students at the Dekwaneh Campus on a daily basis. I am passionate about supporting and empowering students in both their academic and personal growth within the context of what we do at the OSA.

The OSA is committed to providing a positive student experience by offering a wide range of services and support. Our initiatives are student-led, and we are proud to be a student-centric operation. With the support of my colleagues at OSA, I am proud to say that over the past semester we have made great strides in promoting student activities and life at the Dekwaneh campus.

We started by reviving our clubs and societies, which are at the heart of our campus life. Through a series of events, workshops, and activations, we brought students from different faculties together to participate in events such as the “Movies World” themed Club Fair, the "Lebanese Festival" on Lebanese Independence Day, "Heart Attack" on Valentine's Day, Blood Drives, Different Awareness Campaigns, Christmas decoration, World Cup screenings and many more.

We also compiled a list of businesses that offer student discounts and are currently working closely with the Office of Athletics, Wellness, and Recreation, and the Career Services Center to ensure a well-rounded student experience by providing workshops based on the suggestions of the students. This spring semester, we have a lot in store, including workshops, seminars, and competitions, festivals, in addition to the fun activities organized by our clubs.

I am grateful for the support of my colleagues and the staff at the Dekwaneh campus who have made these events possible. A special thanks to my OSA family at all campuses, under the leadership of Mr. Mike Salem, who share the same commitment to creating a wholesome student experience. At the end, I must take a moment to acknowledge our student community and the wonderful creative people, our students, whom I have been privileged to work with.

Funded Research Projects

Public Health and Development Sciences : Project funded by USAID
Principle Investigator: Dr. Myriam Mrad

Barriers to accessing healthcare services associated with rising costs, transportation burdens, and brain drain of professionals have prompted individuals to seek services from primary healthcare centers (PHCs). Revitalizing Medical and health service Offering via Telehealth (REMOTE) project, funded by IOM/USAID through the Diaspora Organization SASTA and its local partner HERA, upscaled the mechanisms and capacity of six PHCs located in different regions in Lebanon, of which five are under the supervision of Order de Malta, Lebanon. The project consisted of 3 phases including a context assessment, capacity building at the organizational level, and upgrading of infrastructures. REMOTE’s sustainability was ensured by providing PHCs with the needed knowledge, skills, and material to implement telehealth. The team is aiming to upscale the project on a national and regional level.

Medical Laboratory Sciences : Project Funded by URG (University Research Grant)
Principal Investigator: Abir Abdel Rahman, PhD
Physicians’ perceptions towards Venous Thromboembolism Practice Guidelines implementation using the Theoretical Domains Framework

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in hospitalized patients. Numerous VTE prevention clinical practice guidelines are available but not consistently implemented. The Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF) is a theoretical framework that was initially developed to identify influences on health professional behaviour related to implementation of evidence-based recommendations to change their behaviour and practice. However, there is a lack of sufficient data regarding the beliefs and barriers to changing the behaviour and practice of physicians towards implementing VTE clinical practice guidelines. Hence, more studies should investigate the magnitude of TDF relevant domains regarding VTE guidelines implementation. Exploring the facilitators and barriers among physicians associated with the VTE guidelines implementation behaviour may increase the practice of VTE risk assessment and appropriate prophylaxis in hospitalized patients in medical and surgical wards. Changing existing practice of physicians requires an understanding of the influences and facilitators that affect their behaviour in following the clinical practice guidelines.

The aim of this cross sectional study is to explore belief that physicians hold about following the VTE in hospitalized patients and to identify the factors that influence physician adherence when treating hospitalized medical patients. This electronic based survey study is planned to produce quantitative data about VTE behaviour, among a representative sample of physicians treating hospitalized patients in Lebanon and in hospitals in Dubai. Physicians providing medical and surgical care for hospitalized adult patients in tertiary hospitals will be included in this study. Using the TDF, factors thought to influence the implementation of VTE clinical practice guideline can be used to develop theoretical intervention by targeting specific psychological factors and linking them to behavior change techniques in order to change the clinical practice of physicians.

Statements From Graduates

Jowy Abi Hanna

Nourhan Abou Assaf
Nutritional Sciences
I am a Faculty of Health Sciences Nutrition program graduate and a Faculty of Medicine medical student graduate currently finishing my second year of residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Balamand. When I decided to major in Nutritional Sciences (pre-medical track) 8 years ago, little did I know how important nutrition was to the human body. But during those years, I was lucky enough to meet distinguished professors who were eager to teach and share their amazing experiences, who were willing to push my yearning for knowledge further. I had a great foundational training in nutrition, which was key in my acceptance into medical school. I learned the indispensable role nutrition plays in a person’s life and cherished the role it plays in pregnancy, where its impact is felt on different scales. Ranging from preterm birth to neural tube defects and other perinatal complications, it’s essential to understand that nutrition can alter every cell in our bodies.

Jessy Matar
Nutritional Sciences
Graduating from the University of Balamand shaped my life in several dimensions. I was lucky to be a student of the very first promotion in Masters of Food Science and Technology, during which we were transfer students to the University of Greenwich; England and the University of Nicosia; Cyprus. The exposure to the multitude of disciplines during 2 years of master’s studies expanded my vision beyond the scientific importance of the major into the legislative, technological and business areas. I also fell in love with research and laboratory work in the short few months of the last semester at FHS. The passion of my supervisors and their guidance was always a motivator to reach academic excellence.

The University of Balamand is very dear to me. When applying to Balamand back in 2006, I had no idea that I will be pursuing a binational doctorate, then joining as a lecturer at FHS, and would eventually still be affiliated to UOB 15 years later. And all throughout this time, I have witnessed the Faculty of Health Science expand and graduate the best students in the region.

I am currently working in consultancy in the Gulf countries. I apply interdisciplinary systems-based approaches to my work, drawing on a background of Food Science and Process Engineering. I also specialize in developing new strategies and working with governmental entities as a lead expert on guidelines design. I believe all students graduating from FHS, can reach the highest positions if they set their minds to it, and if they capitalize on the resources available during their studies.
