Flood Hazard Mapping of el-Kalb River Using GIS, HEC-HMS, and HEC-RAS Hydrologic and Hydraulic Study

Project Description
El-Kalb River estuary, is considered a flood hazard area according to the Lebanese Ministry of Water and Energy. However, no previous GIS flood hazard mapping analysis was carried out to estimate the peak discharge of El-Kalb River and to evaluate its water surface profile. Flood hazard mapping during high rainfall intensity helps forecast maximum height of water that affect the bridge of El-Kaleb River, whin in turn causes severe damages to arterial roads leading to severe traffic blockage. Arc Hydro tools from ESRI ArcGIS, HEC-GeoHMS, and HEC-GeoRAS, were used for hydrological modelling and for extracting the geometric data of the watershed.

Expected Outputs
  • - Watershed Delineation
  • - Water Surface Profile
  • - Flood simulation
  • - Affected area delineation
  • - Intensity Duration Frequency (IDF) Curves
  • - Rainfall Distribution (RD) curves

Beneficiaries
  • - General Public
