Mission
The Psychiatry Residency Program aims to educate residents to become competent specialists in psychiatry and to assume the role of consultants to physicians providing primary care.

Objectives
The Psychiatry Residency Program aims to graduate residents that fulfill the following competencies in medical education:
  • - Medical knowledge:
    Residents will demonstrate knowledge of the clinical, social, behavioral, basic medical sciences and research relevant to psychiatry.
  • - Patient care:
    Residents will demonstrate the ability to develop and implement a therapeutic plan that responds to the individual patient health needs.
  • - Interpersonal and communication skills:
    Residents will listen effectively to patients and establish therapeutic relations with patients and their families based upon trust and participation in decision-making.
  • - Practice-based learning and improvement:
    Residents will critically evaluate and incorporate medical literature appropriately within their practice decisions.
  • - Systems-based practice:
    Residents will collaborate effectively with a multidisciplinary team of health professionals to ensure optimal patient care.
  • - Professionalism:
    Residents will demonstrate respect for patient confidentiality and privacy and adhere to the ethical principles in Psychiatry.

Program Learning Outcomes
By the end of their training, residents are expected to:
  1. Perform a complete diagnostic interview and generate a psychiatric evaluation.
  2. Perform a physical, neurological, and mental status examination.
  3. Formulate the bio-psycho-social problem and generate an appropriate treatment plan.
  4. Generate a differential diagnosis list for major psychiatric disorders.
  5. Identify and assess psychiatric emergencies.
  6. Identify and manage the adverse effects of psychiatric medications.
  7. Assess and manage treatment by psychopharmacologic agents (medication selection, medication safety, monitoring outcomes).
  8. Apply the appropriate psychotherapeutic intervention for the patient diagnosis.
  9. Critically review psychiatric literature
  10. Promote continuous self-learning.
