Mission
The mission of Saint George Faculty of Postgraduate Medical Education is to train residents and fellows to achieve their goal of independent medical and academic practice and to produce physicians that can provide outstanding and compassionate patient care with commitment to uphold the ethical principles of their profession and contribute to the healthcare needs of society.

Residency Program
Residency training is based upon developing the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of residents to meet the requirements of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) General Competencies in Medical Knowledge, Patient Care, Interpersonal and Communication Skills, Practice-Base Learning and Improvement, Systems-Based Practice, and Professionalism.

The Saint George Faculty of Postgraduate Medical Education offers residents the option of pursuing their fellowships of interest in France, Belgium, or Switzerland.

Fellowship Programs

Mission
The mission of the fellowship programs at Saint George Faculty of Postgraduate Medical Education is to provide comprehensive training for specialists in the science and practice of Cardiology, Pulmonary Medicine and Critical Care Medicine, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Hematology and Oncology, Infectious Diseases, and Nephrology and to promote scholarship and research activities.

Objectives
The curricula of fellowship programs are set in accordance with the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) guidelines . The objective of the program is to prepare fellows that can demonstrate upon completion of their training the following six competencies in fellowship medical education:

• - Medical knowledge:
  Fellows are expected to obtain the formal instruction, technical skills, clinical experience and expertise essential for diagnosis and patient care.
• - Patient care: Fellows are expected to practice a compassionate and effective patient care for the prevention, diagnosis, and management of diseases.
• - Interpersonal and communication skills: Fellows are expected to communicate effectively with their patients, their families, their colleagues, and members of the healthcare team.
• - Practice-based learning and improvement: Fellows are expected to effectively use resources and conduct a critical analysis of health care practices to continuously improve patient care.
• - Systems-based practice: Fellows are expected to identify and evaluate issues in the health care system and effectively use resources to deliver optimal health care to their patients.
• - Professionalism: Fellows are expected to apply and maintain the ethical principles governing the medical profession.

I. The Fellowship Program in Cardiology

Program Learning Outcomes
By the end of training, fellows are expected to:

1. Discuss the normal cardiovascular anatomy, physiology, metabolism, and the molecular biology of the cardiovascular system.
2. Identify the pathological and pathophysiological mechanisms of cardiovascular disease.
3. Analyze the principles of cardiovascular disease prevention.
4. Evaluate and manage common clinical cardiovascular and cardiac presentations.
5. Plan, apply, analyze, and evaluate the patient’s clinical investigations.
6. Perform, manage, and master common cardiac procedures.
7. Conduct research within a specific area of expertise.
8. Promote continuous self-education.

 

II The Fellowship Program in Pulmonary Medicine and Critical Care Medicine

Program Learning Outcomes
By the end of training, fellows are expected to:

1. Discuss the relation between structural and functional respiratory abnormalities and recognize their clinical manifestations.
2. Apply a patient-centered approach in clinical care.
3. Perform and manage invasive procedures.
4. Interpret non-invasive diagnostic tests.
5. Master diagnostic and interventional skills in respiratory disease and critical illness.
6. Conduct research and perform hospital rounds.
7. Promote continuous self-education.

III The Fellowship Program in Endocrinology

Program Learning Outcomes
By the end of training, fellows are expected to:

1. Manage and treat common clinical presentations related to clinical endocrinology, diabetes, metabolism, and nutrition within inpatient and outpatient settings.
2. Manage and treat clinical presentations related to pediatric endocrinology.
3. Master the technique of fine needle aspiration biopsy of the thyroid.
4. Perform hospital rounds.
5. Conduct basic and/or clinical endocrinology research.
6. Promote continuous self-education.

IV. The Fellowship Program in Gastroenterology

Program Learning Outcomes
By the end of training, fellows are expected to:

1. Evaluate and manage common clinical presentations in gastroenterology and hepatology.
2. Perform, manage, and master common gastroenterology and hepatology procedures.
3. Plan, apply, analyze, and evaluate the patient’s clinical investigations.
4. Conduct basic and/or clinical research in gastroenterology and hepatology.
5. Conduct teaching rounds.
6. Promote continuous self-education.

V. The Fellowship Program in Hematology and Oncology

Program Learning Outcomes
By the end of training, fellows are expected to:

1. Evaluate and manage common clinical presentations in hematology and oncology.
2. Perform, manage, and master common hematology and oncology procedures.
3. Plan, apply, analyze, and evaluate the patient’s clinical investigations.
4. Conduct basic and/or clinical research in hematology and oncology.
5. Conduct teaching rounds.
6. Promote continuous self-education.

VI. The Fellowship Program in Infectious Diseases

Program Learning Outcomes
By the end of training, fellows are expected to:

1. Manage hospitalized patients with community acquired infections and healthcare associated infections.
2. Discuss the worldwide epidemiology of infectious diseases and identify mechanisms to track emerging infections.
3. Counsel travelers to high risk areas for infectious diseases and explain the rationale for adult vaccination.
4. Apply the principles of antimicrobial stewardship and antibiotic utilization policy.
5. Analyze, evaluate, and apply infection control guidelines.
6. Train in the hospital microbiology laboratory and perform clinical microbiology correlation rounds.
7. Conduct basic and/or clinical microbiological research.
8. Promote continuous self-education.

VII. The Fellowship Program in Nephrology

Program Learning Outcomes
By the end of training, fellows are expected to:

1. Diagnose, investigate, and manage common clinical presentations in nephrology, renal emergencies, and renal disorders in pregnancy.
2. Diagnose, investigate, and manage patients in the Intensive Care Unit.
3. Manage transplant patients.
4. Manage patients on hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis
5. Promote and apply strategies to optimize patient care.
6. Conduct scholarly activities in Nephrology.
7. Promote continuous self-education.
