The MCR-IOE-UOB develops the Management Plan for Small Pelagic Fisheries for the State of Eritrea

The Marine and Coastal Resources Program at the Institute of Environment at the University of Balamand (MCR-IOE-UOB), through extensive in-house work and two successful travel missions to Eritrea working together with the Eritrean Ministry of Marine Resources, carried out necessary activities and research to draft the plan that sets the framework for the sustainable management of the Small Pelagic (SP) fishery in Eritrea.

This joint collaboration aimed to develop an “Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries (EAF)-Based Management Plan for SP Fisheries” in which the MCR, was contracted as fishery management specialist by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to be part of the project for the “Technical Assistance and Capacity-Building for the Management of Small Pelagic (SP) Fisheries in Eritrea”.

The completed “Management Plan” was delivered in January 2020 and aims to provide guidance to decision-makers, fishers and concerned stakeholders on the high priority issues affecting the sustainability of the fishery, while facilitating cooperation and communication among different relevant stakeholders and beneficiaries of fishery resources.
