The high-tech seedling Nursery inauguration

The Agricultural Value Chain Development Center at the University of Balamand in collaboration with United States Agency for International Development (USAID) inaugurated the High-Tech Seedling Nursery at the Issam M. Fares Faculty of Technology in Akkar. This project aims primarily to improve the work conditions of farmers in Akkar and empower them to endure the many challenges facing the Lebanese agricultural sector.

The event was held in the presence of Dr. Elias Warrak, President of UOB; Mr. Douglas Palko, Director of the Economic Development Office at the US Agency for International Development; Celine Melki from LINQ; General William Megally, representing former Prime Minister Issam Fares; Dr. Elie Karam; Dean of the Issam M. Fares Faculty of Technology; and Dr. Rodrique Balaa, The Director of Agricultural Value Chain Development.

During his speech, Palko stressed on: “The importance of cooperation between the university and the USAID and the value of such a project in this specific area.”

The Director of Agricultural Value Chain Development at the University Dr. Rodrique Balaa stressed on “The significance of the partnerships, be it between the university and the USAID, and the farmers and the non-governmental organizations is a key aspect of this project. The aim is that all parties work together at the nursery to ultimately distribute high quality seedling to farmers in the region.”

In closing, Dr. Warrak stated: “We are gathered here today to emphasize again and again that even in the darkest hours of the most challenging times, we can create golden opportunities.”

“In this context, I can only express my profound appreciation and sincere gratitude to the USAID-LINQ team led by Mr. Douglas Balco and Ms. Celine Melki, for their belief in our institution and for their effort and support in turning this remarkable dream into a palpable reality. We hope that this collaboration extends to encompass all aspects of our academic programs as we are definitely eager for more projects to follow.”, he added.

The University of Balamand believes in the role of the agricultural sector in rebuilding the country, and is determined to invest in agricultural development, whether at the academic level or through directly supporting projects such as the High-Tech Seedling Nursery. ​
